Would There Be Interest In A Setup Tutorial Video?

Hey Friends,

I’ve got half a thought in my head. Given the, ehm, ‘elephant in the room’, I’ve been particularly happy that I have a self-hosted instance of /e/Cloud, and I’m thinking that there may be a few other people who might want to join the club of self-hosted /e/Cloud users…but I also very much understand that it’s a bit daunting to perform an install for those who have no experience in setting up a Linux server or dealing with DNS or all of the other tasks that an /e/Cloud deployment entails.

To that end, I was considering making a video that goes through the whole process - from the initial creation of a VPS instance to the DNS changes needed for the domain, to connecting an /e/OS phone to the server, and everything in between. While the documentation from Smu44 is flawless, it can be a bit abstract for those unfamiliar with the concepts involved. I figure that it may help some to be able to watch a video of the process.

If there is interest within the community, awesome…I’ll do what I can to make it happen. If there isn’t…I’ll find another way to be helpful =)

Hey @voyager529,

I was too lazy, and now missing enough free time, to produce something similar.
It’s a very good idea!
Not only to help, but also to promote the self-hosted

Hello folks !

Is it possible to point to such a tutorial post ?
My search didn’t help me finding it.

Hi there, @Didou !

The documentation for a self-hosted deployment can be found here: e / infra / ecloud-selfhosting · GitLab .

@smu44 , I’ll see if I can conjure up the time to make it. I’ve got a number of servers to migrate from VMWare to Proxmox, in addition to the holiday season itself, but let’s see if I can work some magic and get it done by the end of the year =).

Follow-up question: Where would I host it? I mean…is there a Youtube alternative for an hour-long video? Is it going on Vimeo, or would the /e/Foundation have some place I could upload it?

There’s no rush

Youtube is my best bet: this is where the video will target the widest audience.
Some alternatives exist, like What is Odysee? | Odysee Help Hub.

[FreeSoftware-ad] Have you ever heard of PeerTube ?

PeerTube is a self-hosted ActivityPub-federated video streaming platform using P2P directly in your web browser.

It is free and open-source software, under AGPLv3 licence.

I have!

…However, I don’t think it’s terribly useful in this case. If I were able to self-host the video, I’d just spin up an nginx server and create a URL; takes way less time and effort =). The problem is the bandwidth; the datacenter my server is hosted in is giving me my 1U rack space for free, in exchange for me being a good neighbor…so, video hosting is a nonstarter, regardless of the backend =).

I think Smu’s recommendation of Odysee is probably the best bet; I’ll give it a go and we can see what happens. I’m looking forward to this project =).

If it may help: when the new self-hosted pre-release will be available for testing (no ETA yet, fingers crossed), I’ll have to throw a new instance anyway.
So, it may be the perfect opportunity to take a video…

What’s wrong with posting it to Youtube? There is 0 need to host it yourself. Odysee is a great site as well. I’ve never seen a video where people actually connect their phone with it. They only talked about it. I have been thinking about a Pi setup with RustDesk a webserver and Nextcloud. I’ll have to use reverse proxy on this, but that’s not of importance atm. I would love to see how you setup your things and connect to your phone. And also thanks for the link to the written guide.
