Thanks a lot. Best regards.

That’s great, all of the main app that use are already in the repository
Would it be useful to report applications that we think shouldn’t be part of this repo because they were recognized to be harmful for the user’s privacy?

For instance, the Onavo VPN (com.onavo.spaceship) was found to monitor the user’s phone and web activities (https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/29/facebook-project-atlas/)

@sorae we can start a separate post for apps which should not be in this repository.

This thread has become a bit overwhelming. So many apps!

I would like to see a statement of principle concerning the goal of this repository. Is it simply to make available everything in the Play Store and F-Droid through an interface integrated into /e/ or are we looking for a restricted set of apps that have been vetted to meet the privacy criteria that are the ‘raison d’être’ for /e/?

I don’t see any reason to simply reproduce the contents of F-Droid or the Play Store. Proprietary banking apps, etc. can be installed via the Play Store and many FOSS titles are available through F-Droid. So, again I ask, what is the goal of a /e/ repository?

@dpb this thread is specific for apps users want to see on the /e/ repository. It is not a copy of google play or Fdroid. You can get a basic understanding about the repository here https://e.foundation/next-e-release-and-features/

Thanks @Manoj! The link you give is very helpful. That the /e/ store will provide a privacy score and details concerning the privacy attributes of each application is a real value-add. Looking forward to it!

Thanks a lot, best regards.

I would like banks to publish banking app’s in F-Droid too, the same for governments, but they just don’t do it.

I agree. But this is probably a discussion to be held somewhere else. There are probably quite a few legal and mental obstacles to overccome. I suppose what would be needed are frontrunners - banks and (probably local and regional) govrnements who publish on purpose open source and on F-roid and who are able to show a passway.

The reason why I started collecting banking apps - I feel when the /e/ repository starts it would be good to come with a selection of apps where people feel comfortable with. For me F-Droid is the right way but the apps available are too limited. I assume transport and financial apps are key to complete the F-Droid repository.

As you are doing this, I hope you are also taking into consideration existing solutions such as F-Droid, or getJar. I found out that F-Droid allows you to add your own repositories which can then be accessible via F-Droid

Google seems to have security leaks with SMS.
So from marsh 9 2019, SMS permissions will be allowed mainly to the default SMS application handler.
It’s a true problem but Google solution is bad !
If someone really want to secure SMS, I suggest that he should :

  • not allow using SMS flow and internet flow at the same time,
  • not allow SMS sending to a correspondent who is not in the user’s Android or /e/ contact book.

How /e/ manages security and such leaks ?

org.mozilla.focus is missing, using Firefow Klar now and Fennec F-Droid; both are based on org.mozilla.focus
