Battery drain due to mobile network

Hi there! I have a problem very similar to this one. I’m running e-os v4.0 on my FP4. Unfortunately, the aforementioned thread was closed without a definitive resolution, so I’m asking my question here again. TL;DR: from the debug log it seems that there’s some wakelock going on, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to analyze this further. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Problem: unless I turn on flight mode, the battery drains very quickly. To be more precise: with flight mode on, power usage is at a steady 0.5W (checked using AccuBattery). Without flight mode, it’s in the 1.0-1.5 range at the minimum with frequent spikes to around let’s say 2.5W.

Preliminary analysis: The battery usage statistics report that most of the drain is related to the mobile network system. However, simply disabling mobile data (using solely WiFi) does not fix the problem. I need to really disable all internet access. It also happens if I’m using only mobile data and no WiFi, by the way.

Steps already taken: I have reset the internet configuration (both mobile and wifi). I have tried turning VPN off. I have disabled background data usage for most apps, especially for the ones that are reported to consume a lot of battery. I have enabled data saver mode. I have disabled the microG cloud messaging thingy. None of this has helped.

Debug logs: Below is a snippet of the debug logs. What I find suspicious is the frequent occurrence of the keywords cellular_high_tx_power, wake_lock, org.microg.gms.gcm.mcs.RECONNECT and org.thoughtcrime.securesms (Signal). But what exactly is going on, I cannot tell. I would love for someone to find a smoking gun here and a clear solution Many thanks in advance!

Just some observations looking at them:

WiFi scanning appears to be on, which can use a fair amount of battery.
I still see ProtonVPN(not needed considering what /e/ has but I digress) in that top line, is it in always-on mode in your settings, and if not is it force stopped to not exist in the background?
Proton Calendar I am pretty sure performs syncs on some interval, have you tried force stopping it as well?

I do not have enough knowledge of this sort of thing to help much, but I wanted to at least try.

Well, I won’t be much help, buy I can say: I use the phone (Gigaset GS6 Pro) with e/OS ver.4.0 and with Proton VPN always on, Avast AV in the background, either on home Wi-Fi, or when out on mobile network with Lebara in U.K. (on the piggy back of Vodafone) and my phone’s battery does not drain out of ordinary… I’d say much better than with google android on my previous phone. Battery on my phone lasts 48 hours, where with the same usage on previous google android phone it was 1 day, forget the fact battery is 1.4x bigger than before but still lasts twice as long!

You must have a serious battery management problem on that FP!

I wouldn’t blame e/OS personally.

I’d speak to phone manufacturer for support.

It doesn’t sound right what You say.

Thanks for your reply! I disabled WiFi scanning (which was on, indeed, unbeknownst to me), but it did not fix the problem. I’ve also tried turning off VPN (I tried this before actually) but it also has no effect. Also force stopped Proton Calendar to no avail.

By the way, I’m not blaming e/os for this, just noticed that people posted similar issues to these forums. If anyone knows a better place to ask this, I’m all ears.

Edit: I’ve also been using Lumo (the Proton chatbot) to diagnose this, and it suggests that the modem’s firmware may be out of date. According to the settings, I’m on version .2.5.1-01069-BITRA_GEN_PACK-1.39701.2.50680.2. Does anyone know if I could somehow manually upgrade this? Or do I have to wait for an e/os update?

You don’t have any backup process running in the background, do you? You would have known it I hope, like Murena cloud synch.

Then it would kick in whenever you connect to internet. Or any automated updates etc.

Have you checked the traffic on internet e.g. in VPN screen?

That wake lock sounds odd.

They say:

It suggests some apps may have ‘wake lock’ added to keep your device awake and that drains battery. I am not an expert (unfortunately) but using common sense your ‘cellular’ process is draining the battery and it looks like a wake lock may be involved?

Maybe someone here knows more about it.

Perhaps create a ticket with Murena support?

P.S. Silly question maybe, anything stands out in normal battery usage report (settings) with break down list of apps?

P.S.* Have you tried stopping, getting rid of, Signal by any chance?

So I’m running on FP4 and have most of the applications installed that you mention (Proton etc). Battery lasts all day. Wonder if you’ve got a rogue app. What does the Battery Status show is consuming power? Failing that, perhaps a hard reset and rebuild the phone installation (which I know is a pain).

Just an addendum: I have used the app bbs_reloaded to inspect a strange CPU usage problem.
The app itself is not open source, but the developer can IMHO be trusted. Moreover, some features are still missing, and you have to perform some steps with ADB to grant the necessary rights to the app.

In my case, it was not really a battery drain problem, but the CPU did not enter “Deep Sleep”. VoWiFi was the culprit: I had configured the phone to always use VoWiFi when WiFi was available, and VoLTE only as a fallback. When WiFi was disabled, this seems to confused the firmware and led to a never-ending wakelock.
Switching to VoLTE as default (with VoWiFi as fallback) fixed this problem. (I have a OnePlus 6, and I guess that other phone models are not affected by this bug.)

I’ve been hit with similar problem for a couple month or so. It coincided with the installation of several applications (android auto, Qobuz, and some others) and I thought they were the culprit, with battery drain over night ranging from 30 to 40%.
Losing patience over fiddling with installing or removing them with no effect, I reset the phone to factory settings, do nothing more than import contacts just in case, and let it be.

23% drain over night. Which seems to be less than before but online resources suggests it is still abnormal. So on Fairphone 4 with e/os set with default everything the drain is big.

I doubt it is a faulty battery, I changed it like 3-4 months ago and nevertheless BBS reloaded still suggest a doze battery drain of 126 mAh/hr while it shouldn’t be above 50 so independently from the battery the phone is hungry.

It could be a bad network coverage, but I have no call issue and the network seems well detected so not really convinced.

BBS Reloaded seems to indicate ntfy has been active a lot.

I will try next to install Android, leave it in default settings and see if I have similar results.

Update: Switching back to Android significantly reduced dozing consumption, from 126 mAh/hr to 21 mAh/hr with 4% used over the night instead of the ~23%, and it includes installing all the apps I used on e/OS. So it seems the high dozing consumption is bound to e/os (as I had it even just after factory reset) or one of its default options.

I don’t really have time and will to do further research, all that already drained two afternoons. Since I value my fairphone, I can’t afford murdering its battery…

I also have the problem that my battery drains very fast, I’m on a FP3. When I first created an issue for this problem, I had no idea where it was coming from. I did some analysis with battery-historian, but I wasn’t really able to draw any conclusions from it. By now, I know that the battery drain is much, much less when I disable mobile data. Which matches the output of my battery usage stats.

This sounds somewhat related to your problem, however, on the other hand, for me simply disabling mobile data does the job. Currently I’m running e/OS v4.1.1.

Same effect on my wife’s FP3, which is still running e/OS v3.

Disabling mobile data also reduces the battery drain when the phone is in range of a WiFi all day. This comes as a surprise to me, as I thought that the mobile connection would not be used when there is a WiFi connection. VoLTE is switched off.
