Best device for photos?

Hi

can anyone advice the best device (and app?) for the best photo quality on /e/?

I have been using /e/ for many years, have bought various devices direct from /e/ store and also ebay etc but photo and video quality has always been sub-par.

Dont mind spending some $ but would like to know for sure before I buy that the device and /e/ will actually perform well for photos/videos.

Thanks,

Michael

Any Motorola phone comes with eOS camera and stock Moto camera, I use the Moto camera.

In the case of the eOS Pixel(s) I use the eOS camera and its fine, same as the OnePlus Nord.

Sony Xperia 1 III or V have quite good quality photos on Sony application. You need to find one, which works, as some versions won’t work on some devices. I have both at the moment. Try to avoid AUTO mode, as photos are worst there. Huge bonus is SD card and 3.5mm jack. Massive bonus is 2.9x and 4.4x zoom in single lens on mark 3 and 3.5x to 5.2x variable zoom (yes, like DLSR - whatever you want in those brackets) on mark 5. Mark 5 have 2x zoom by cropping of sensor (sensor is 48mpx) and 2x and 3x by digital zoom on variable zoom lens too (this camera is 12mpx, so don’t expect magic on beyond 5.2x zoom). Mark 5 have some AI, but I have no idea about results, as I despise AI. I want to have real photograph, not AI generated junk.

tongue-in-cheek  but I was pretty impressed by Blackberry 2014-phone era shots: https://old.reddit.com/r/blackberry/comments/1o2ykfw/camera_on_the_blackberry_passport_running_android/

When you say ā€˜on Sony application’ do you mean there using a sony camera app on /e/? Is that something that is available in app lounge or is it a workaround?

Thanks.

Funny you should mention blackberry!! I had been sorting through old photos I had from 2013-2015 and was really impressed with the image quality .. and then realised I had been using a blackberry back then. Switched to /e/ when blackberry moved to BB10, and my photos havent been as good since

No, Sony Photography Pro, Sony Videography Pro and Sony Cinema Pro are not available anywhere, not Google, nowhere. You need to download it from apk mirror like e.g. APKmirror.

Yes, it works. Some versions works only on specific devices. Just download newest, try it, if it doesn’t work, then uninstall and install next older. That is what I did.

Hello,

I also wanted a good camera, so I bought a refurbished Pixel 5, as the reviews pointed good quality pictures.
I was first totally disappointed when using the native app that comes with /e/.
Almost useless, ā€˜HDR’ pictures are totally blurred (still not fixed!), screen grayed out when switching between cameras, de-noising eating most details…

So I installed a GCam port and now the image quality matches a Pixel 5 with native Google OS.
And it can read a QR-Code without having you to select a special mode…

Interesting, I was very happy with RAW images quality but I thing I was using Open camera or sth similiar.

Anyway I am not expecting much from a phine camera. If I need really good qualit I take FF ā€œreal" camera. Only one advantage of a phone is it’s always with me. Oh, another one - It rather won’t be destroyed at the party

I use graphene os camera app and works great on CMF phone 1

Hi, what’s the name of the gcam app you used? Is it available on app lounge? I searched for gcam on app lounge but there are tons of options, and lots with low privacy scores.

Hi, I use MGC_9.2.113_A11_V29_MGC.apk (com.android.MGC_9_2_113), from https://www.celsoazevedo.com
Not available on app lounge, so no known privacy score…

Great question and discussion. It’s showing that the camera app in todays world is as important as the physical photo sensors used.
I use Open Camera and think it’s fine. I’d love to try GCam or Graphene Cam, but would prefer an option from the AppLounge. Any other suggestions for camera apps that you think are better than the e/os camera app?

The GraheneOS camera is also known as Secure Camera app.grapheneos.camera.play

Look DxOmark to watch the best smartphone for that.

I get visible differences between Stock Android with Google Camera and the /e/OS default camera app on the same Pixel device. Is there some tinkering necessary for /e/OS? The camera quality is the only thing between me and complete switch to /e/OS. Everything else is working fine.

It is unlikely to be ā€œtinkeringā€ but ofc optimum settings will work best.

The default Camera app is a fork of OpenCamera. As the name suggests this uses ā€œall Open Sourceā€ libraries and methods to process the images. If Google devices use proprietary firmware (likely) then OpenCamera does not have access to this level of ā€œfine tuningā€ to the actual hardware.

A carefully chosen GCam app on a Pixel has the chance to provide all this firmware.

/e/OS devs have put significant work into inclusion of a Moto Camera tuned to the device on (some) Moto builds. For example Version 7.2.91.68-denali com.motorola.camera2

Which GCam app is recommended for a Pixel 3XL? And do i need additional app stores to find the correct app? The phone is in parental mode and is for my daughter. I don’t want to install unnecessary apps on it. Similiar goes for the 6 Pro, which is my personal testing /e/OS phone.

This Google Camera Ports Download contains links to development work.
