Bliss launcher and it's app switcher

I been using e os for a while now and it been great how ever bliss launcher is giving me problem. I use 3 button navigation and from time to time either both home and app switch or just app switch button don’t work. I don’t use bliss launcher as my default launcher i use lawnchair but app switcher is still controlled by bliss launcher. I saw this topic already Complete removal of Bliss launcher how ever I don’t trust myself with rooting my device. If I had another phone maybe I would try experimenting with root but I don’t. Is there any way to either switch bliss launcher or fix that issue without root? So far only way of fixing that problem is to constantly go to settings and stop bliss launcher so it turns on again making all buttons work for a while but it’s pretty annoying thing to do constantly.

Have you made changes in the developer settings? There’s an option in the Apps section called Don’t keep activities. This option affects a lot the function of the button bar at the bottom. You should have this option strictly switched OFF, this means “do keep the activities”, otherwise especially the square button will not work as expected.

It is off and i dont really use developer settings. Only time i used them was to install the E os and never touched it again. Square button works completly fine i keep activities there is no problem with that. Even during the bug when i cant use my square button activities are kept. After reset of bliss launcher it comes back to working again. I also have a question because when i scrolled throught dev options i saw option of using debuging with root access does that mean my device is already rooted? I said that rooting device is something that scares me but if i would follow the instruction that GnuGorets gave on their’s post would it actually work or does that option just exists even if device isnt rooted? Thank you for your help!

There’s no way to change the recents provider without rooting the device. Then you have to use a Magisk module to change it. Even so the Lawnchair recents provider isn’t reliable either. If you use a nightly build of Lawnchair it may work. I gave up on it for the time being myself, but i may try again once a new stable version of Lawnchair is released.

I’m not having any issue with the Bliss recents provider while running Lawchair as my launcher. As a test you might try setting Bliss as your launcher to see if the problem persists. You could also try clearing cache and data for Bliss Launcher and also for Lawnchair.

You might try running the nightly build of Lawnchair since it has some bug fixes not present in the official release; Github page here

Hi) You’re not able to change it without root, because it needs root permissions

No, it is not already rooted, but rooted adb debugging is useful for many jobs (but not this one).

Very many users have Lawnchair working fine. Rather than

from time to time … you may need to

Settings > Apps and notifications > See all … apps > BlissLauncher > Storage & cache > Clear storage | Clear cache

… as indicated by @irrlicht “something else” may be the cause of this apparent need to reset.

When one changes Launcher there are a few simple things to remember (maybe found here [HOWTO] Start to customise /e/).

Yes Lawnchair as a launcher generally works fine. It fact it works surprisingly well for me, like zero bugs. However the OP’s issue is with the recents provider (aka app switcher) which handles the buttons for 3 button navigation among other navigation tasks.

The recents provider is a separate module that’s included in the launcher package. For example you can see two processes for Bliss using the process list in developer options, a persistent one for the launcher and one for the recents provider which appears when called for a navigation task. You can pretty much consider these separate apps even though they appear under the same name. It’s a trivial thing to change the launcher, but you have to jump through some hoops to change the recents provider.

Yes, thank you but sometimes one tries to answer a question from the point one thinks the questioner is at

He said he didn’t want to root the device. I agree with that sentiment. I did not want to root my device either, but I went ahead and did it because, well, I hate Bliss that much, both the launcher and recents provider.

In any case the Lawnchair recents provider was a fail for me, it crashes on startup. I decided to live with the Bliss recents provider until I can try again with a new release of Lawnchair. Supposedly the nightly build works, but I gave up on it for now because I was sick of messing with it. Still every time I use the Bliss recents provider I get a twinge of anger about not being able to replace it.

Really doubt it will work as I tried multiple launchers when I started using e os as I don’t like how bliss launcher works, been on nova for a while same thing kept happening other launchers had same problems but didn’t stay for long on them. Might try it but as recent is separate module I don’t think it will work.

Ah I see, was mostly wondering.

I did this a lot never works sadly.

That’s sucks but when I get to have root will probably used your tutorial thank you for that!

I do want to root my device as want to try getting my banking app working without need of downloading Google play but as I said kinda scared to do that for now till I can afford new phone I will have more fun with it and try learning it so yeah for now it’s sadly no root for me.

Yeah that’s mostly why I went here. Was wondering if there would be a way without root that I don’t know of as I don’t really have experience with phones as I usually just use if to kill time while most of the time would be pc.

Welp didn’t really got solution but I got answers to my question. Thank you all for your help I really appreciate it. Take care of yourself!

I think that pretty much rules out the launcher, it sounds like a problem with Bliss itself. One last thing is I would see if the problem persists with Bliss set as the launcher. I think a last resort would be to backup your data and do a factory reset. If that still doesn’t solve the problem, try another phone.

As far as banking apps, it depends on the app. Not all check for a rooted phone or an unlocked bootloader. Also it’s possible hide root through Magisk so apps pass the check. In any case you already said you didn’t want to mess with rooting the phone and I can understand that.

Whatever the case, if your needs come down to installing Google Play (which I don’t know if that’s even do-able), you might as well just just use a stock Android phone. Avoiding Google Play is one of the major reasons to use a de-googled phone. It’s the 800 pound gorilla.

One note on that, if you are in the USA and you are a student or have a low income, you may be able to get a phone and plan for free through the government Lifeline program. There’s a bunch of providers for it like these guys; https://lifewireless.com.

I was curious about it and looked into it a bit. I found one provider that offers a Pixel 8a phone for free which would be good for /e/os provided it’s not locked down. Of course I don’t qualify myself, but if I did I would jump on it.
