Calendar Gives Alerts Days After Event Took Place

When I set an alert in the Calendar app, it rarely gives me the alert when I ask for it, and Days after the event, I will have alerts pop up on my phone. I make sure to keep my calendar program on my old desktop and laptop up to date, because the one in the phone is worthless.
