Cannot get Android Auto to work

Fairphone 4 v2.7. I have installed Waze, Sygic and Musicolet which are all Android Auto compatible. When connecting to the car, the phone shows something like “no Android Auto compatible apps installed” and after a short time the car shows “Android Auto has stopped working”.

Searches suggest I have to install the Google app which, from what I can find, reverts everything to fully Googled. No way!

Are there some settings I need to change? If not, is there any way around the Google app requirement please?

“it requires to install and use some applications coming from Google. We are exploring ways to bypass those requirements.”

It will make AA work, but only the media apps, not navigation.

Thank you.

I had seen your previous post about this and was planning to try it tomorrow, but it looks like I am stuffed, it is the navigation apps I want to use.
