Cloud/mail doesn't work with TOTP (FP3+, EOS 3.01)

Hi,

I’m running eOS 3.0,1-t-202506064987724-official-FP3 and I’m overall satisfied.

But cloud-syncing doesn’t want to work with TOTP two-factor authentification switched on. I followed the instructions (app-password for cloud, main password for mail), and also tried the other logically possible options (the other way around, same app-password for both, different app-password for each) - but I get authentification errors from the mail-app again and again.

The only way it works is by switching off two-factor authentification.

Any other suggestions and ideas?

Kind regards
Jues

It may be possible that mail synchronization is activated in your Murena account settings on the phone, which overwrites your main password in the mail app with your app password.

I had a similar issue, whose solution (in my case) I have described at Feedback for v2.9 - #84 by Tentos

Current summary if you have 2FA activated on murena.io:

  • Update the email app to Version 6.711-2 (it should be listed in App Lounge).
  • Deactivate mail synchronization in Murena account settings
  • Set the IMAP and SMTP password to the main password of your murena.io account

I assume that your email app is already up-to-date because you have /e/OS 3.0

Now I recognise that the mail app doesn’t save the changed password:

First, it complains about a failed athentification. Then I provide the main password, and it fetches mails smoothly.

But at the next interval it complains again aboiut a failed authentification - and strangely it is still the old app password. It didn’t save the new main password.

It’s reproducible and happens no matter in which way I try to save the new password.

Will try by deleting and rwstoring the whole account now.

Indeed, this is the behaviour that I have observed. The workaround was the deactivation of mail synchronization in the Murena account settings.

I finally found it out, but it seems to be really important to perform steps in the right order of things. For me it worked by:

  1. Setting up the account on the phone without TOTP
  2. Switching off “mail sync” under accounts → murena → account sync
  3. Then, configuring two-factor authentification on murena.io (web) and creating an app password
  4. Finally, on the phone under accounts → murena → my account → settings changing the password from main password to app password

My first attempts with, first, switching on TOTP and, then, changing the setting on the phone generated complications of one kind or another.
