A colleague of mine uses Murena and /e/OS and now has problems sending e-mails with the error message “authentication failed” and recently “retries exceeded”. There’s no way to look these errors up nor are there error codes associated with the errors, hence why I post here.
Do any of you have remedies or suggestions to fix this problem? I already logged back in multiple times and the error still persists. He’s had this problem since early June.
You might want to check your colleague’s /e/OS build number in the System Settings (“About phone”). What you describe sounds like something that often happens with (very) outdated software/operating system versions.
in what context do the errors pop up, layered in front of the Mail app? a screenshot would be helpful (anonymized if username visible) apart from the exact version as urs was asking for
Upgrading to R might temporarily help with the email problem, but that is just a vague hope. If you want to try, you will need to manually install the upgrade to R (Android 11).
“authentication failed”: re-enter password in Mail → (sidebar) Settings → Account → Sending mail → Outgoing server (ignoring that /e/ v2.9 bug if the device is on v1.8.1). Also check the email address itself if a typo was introduced
“retries exceeded”: will inevitably come up after too many auth failures. Though user noted it can come up during smtp being unavailable here and here.
