Desktop mode on /e/OS

/e/OS is a mobile operating system. It should prioritize being a mobile OS first. That being said, the default messaging app does not use encryption. I would much prefer RCS over some gimmick DT mode that a few people might show off to their friends but never use on a regular basis. RCS would benefit most users using /e/OS.

In Spanish we say: quien mucho abarca, poco aprieta. It means that if you want to do lots of things, you will do nothing.

You are doing a good job with /e/OS. Are you sure you can deal with it and with the Desktop mode too?

I think the Desktop mode is not necessary. I think you should focus on /e/OS. It’s my opinion.

Best regards,

As you very well know, I love e/OS and I’ll make everything in my possibilities to spread its usage. Here a list of priorities that go above Desktop Mode:

  1. Fixing 90hz refresh rate on FairPhone 5 dropping drastically after every sleep/wake of the device
  2. Creating in App Lounge a “Editor’s Choice” section for apps you support, linking a in house repo for those apps that doesn’t rely on google play store. These apps should cover 80% people’s needs and be either open source or European apps like Curve that allows people to pay with the phone without google or apple wallet.
  3. Dropping side projects like spot (for now) and teaming up with Qwant (EUSP) team to regain European Digital Soverignity
  4. Teaming up with Vivaldi to integrate e/OS services in a fully European Browser maybe?
  5. Creating a linux distro that integrates with murena cloud services (I’m doing it!)
  6. Collaboration is key to success! Keep digging and asking as many other producers to integrate Murena Cloud Services Support.
  7. Support for Gigaset GX6 Pro (european based, support wireless charging and 120 hz)
  8. Instead of trying everything to make e/OS compatible with too many phones, I’d pick a few and make the experience perfect (and would choose European manufacturers only like CMF, Fairphone and Gigaset - and others as well).

i like this idea.

sorry, but not sure it is ethically desirable,
Vivaldy is not Open Sources
even it is now an old story, Qwant was founded by some bandits !

it is more Lineage team and free android community users job, than /e/…

True, but e/OS has the power to choose which devices to officially support and they should focus on a few European Devices only but covering most price points and most user prototype (some need better cameras, some need higher Refresh Rate, some Wireless Charging).

Vivaldi is mostly open source as from what explicitely explained on vivaldi blog

There is one last thing. We should focus on European Digital Sovereignty as much as on Open-Sourceness in such time.

Can we consider cromite 100% suitable for all uses?

About Qwant I guess you should read this https://www.eu-searchperspective.com

I have yet to get an /e/OS device, though I would love to and am planning on it IF at least most of my apps will work.

If it is the case that banking apps do not work, then as I really depend on this to deposit payment checks, this might be at a minimum prevent me from getting both a phone and a tablet (which would be my plan to replace both).

I would agree that getting apps working would be a higher priority of a desktop interface.

Could there be a literal poll that would allow users and prospective users to ranks their priority future developments? Even if it is not a scientifically representative sample, at least it might help guide decision-making?

Yes, I suppose this would be similar to Samsung Dex, which I used to use at university when I had a Samsung smartphone.

It was very useful, I would love to see simialr functionality on e/OS

You can check this list to see whether a particular banking app has been tested. It seems to me that most of them work and that efforts are being made to fix any problems with certain problematic apps if and when they are discovered. It may be that some app providers still try to block users on platforms other than the major ones, so the risk of failure is probably slightly higher than if you use Google’s Android or iOS. The one banking app that I need to use a few times a year has worked flawlessly on /e/OS so far (admittedly just for a few months and a couple of updates; I installed /e/OS in December 2024).

I have used desktop mode with various phones, and found myself going back to a laptop because I needed more processing power and better graphics to run software like LibreOffice, UI.Vision.RPA (browser automation), Image Editors, IDEs, etc. Desktop mode also requires a mouse / touchpad, keyboard and display. At that point, a laptop might be more convenient or less cumbersome.

I would rather see further development in the existing /e/OS features. For instance, better speech to text recognition and clearer text to speech output preinstalled by default would be a significant benefit to users, as would a basic “complete backup” app. Currently, I use the fantastic Sherpa for my TTS engine. https://k2-fsa.github.io/sherpa/onnx/tts/apk-engine.html. The voices are excellent. For speech recognition, I use Sayboard, which mostly works.

Unfortunately, I have not found a comprehensive backup app for all the files and settings.

In case you need any more no votes: i’d rather you focus on mobile use, creating a de-googled android is a big enough task, you don’t need to spread yourself any thinner. Keep up the good work.

Yes, i think its a good idea.

Having moved from my stock Tab S7 to a Pixel Tablet with /e/, I do miss being able to use DeX onthe tablet itself. Would be cool if it was tested/explored on the tablet side of things. But only if the team has the bandwidth, I’d rather a table experience than this feature possibly introducing more problems.

I’d enable it behind a switch as an experimental option? here’s some hands-on of a user who flipped config_isDesktopModeSupported on a handheld. It needed some mods to be acommondating - https://old.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/1jsoro9/desktop_mode_android_15/

Am I missing the point if I were to say that given the size of /e/OS staff I would rather see an effort in maintaining old devices and offering OTA upgrades for as many phones as possible to Android 15 and further versions rather than developing a feature that is already possible to use with scrcpy?

I see a future desktop mode as something quite different from scrcpy. I sometimes use scrcpy, mainly when I have to type a long text message to someone who doesn’t use email. There are of course other use cases for scrcpy, but the main difference is that in order to use it you’d have to carry a laptop (or desktop) along with your phone. On the other hand, if the phone had a desktop mode, then you could use it instead of a laptop which could be useful when traveling or otherwise on the go, assuming that it works well and that you can find a keyboard, mouse and monitor that will fit in your bag or is available at your destination. In my case, such a destination would be our summer cabin where we happen to keep a monitor and keyboard (currently used to provide my laptop with an extra screen and a more ergonomic keyboard).

So I don’t think that a desktop mode would duplicate scrcpy. There are superficial similarities but they’d be useful in different situations.

Yes I would also like it

Yes there are some key differences, mainly you need a PC to use scrcpy. However, how much difference is there between the need for a keyboard, mouse, monitor set and the need for a PC. In terms of bulk, a basic laptop would be more compact and include all three.

Another difference is the interface. At this point I would submit scrcpy does a better job. The state of Desktop Mode is dependent on AOSP development which has made some strides in Android 15, but my understanding is it’s still pretty clumsy. Not all apps can resize windows and window management is still rudimentary.

Scrcpy can do the job as it stands, but Desktop Mode in maturity would be a better interface. So there’s a lot of work involved for something that’s still lacking in its current state.

We can already doing this with termux and vnc

Hi guys and @Manoj
As a long /e/ user on many devices, may I suggest to, sort by priority :

  • set up a reliable way to backup and restore (or transfer) /e/ settings, installed apps/settings, etc … with an app for new comers with compatible device
  • keep up your regular and open communication with users base,
  • use your task force on bug solving on Murena’s sold devices ( to strengthened your trustworthiness and believability),
  • and be more detailed about your idea of a “Desktop Mode”: as an app, integrated mode, or what ?
  • Don’t be evil

My 2 cents:

  • if you need/want to team up with others please select them with care:
