Didn't succeed to enable Mobile Data on G6 Plus

Hi there!

I just installed the latest community release (Android14) on an G6 Plus. The installation worked fine, and everything looks ok except the Mobile Data. Impossible to connect to the mobile network. The voice and SMS work fine but the SIM status always shows : “Network status: unknown, Service Status: In Service, Signal Strength: 96 dBm, Voice Network Type: UMTS, Mobile Data Network Type: unknown.”
I checked the APN settings and tried to change IP types and Preferred Network type without success. Surprisingly if I select LTE only or GSM only, I loose also the voice and SMS connection. I wonder if this could be related to the way network types are now defined differently from what it was under older android versions (3G, 4G, 5G). What could you advice? Many thanks!

Claude.

Hi @ClaudeV , did you try your G6 before /e ? If yes, any trouble at this time ?
You may try to give your phone some time to sync him with your operator.
You may try to reboot and/or to reset your phone (under /e options).

Hi Tintin,
I didn’t check the connection under Android. I just verified that the phone was in line with the latest updates before loading /e as indicated in the installation procedure. I am using the same SIM with another Nokia phone which works well. I tried to restart several times after trying to modify and delete/recreate the APNs. I also tried to restart from the default factory settings. Is that what you mean by “under e/ options” or did I miss something? Shall I try a complete re-installation?
Many thanks for taking time.

Have you checked with your carrier that you have the up to date APN settings, the APN do need to be quite exact. You may be able to get the carrier to send an Over The Air reset of APN. There are quite a number of threads with to hashtag apn which may give further insight.

Hi aibd,
Checking the APN settings is what I tried at first. I have checked with other phones we have at home with the same carrier and the carrier’s tutorials. I also read through many tips I found on the web around APN setting. I didn’t yet call the carrier for a possible over the air reset.
Anyway, APN setting doesn’t explain why I am loosing Phone and SMS connection when I select as preferred network GSM only or LTE only. I guess that the /e image uses some moto configuration and description files specific to the G6 Plus hardware which are compatible with Android 9. It seems that with Android very latest versions, the network description changed from simply 5G,4G,3G,2G to more complexe combinations. I can count 34 of those. The default set by the image is now LTE/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA instead of simply 4G. Couldn’t this be the issue I am facing?
Thanks!

I have Moto G7 Power ‘ocean’ and I am using
LTE/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA but I chose that after quite a long session of trying everything above this point in the list. I believe No 1 on the list

is the default in my case.

It might be worth trying others, in order to better harmonise with your carrier.

I have tried all settings that should fit but I am still limited to phone and SMS no data, no MMS.
By the way, I an not familiar with Android debugging. From the developer mode should it be possible to activate some error logging and log files which may help to find my issue? Thanks for advise!

There is this [LIST] Carriers that work or do not work with /e/OS country-wise. You might share the name of your carrier in case there are others who have had particular experiences with that carrier. If you have a carrier who likes to charge a premium rate for support I can understand this discouraging.

I get free support and have found the call handlers helpful in answering specific questions as your first post. They prefer to keep customer’s income if the SIM service is not up to expectation after all.

Re debugging there are some secret codes in the dialer which may be illuminating. You may find better guides or someone else might chip in with what you need but this is what I am talking about:

Thanks for the information. My carrier is Free Mobile it is the list, so just need to find out how to make it work on my G6. In the meantime I started to look at the log files with adb logcat. I found some “telephony” logs that may be helpful. Still need to dig out how to interpret all this data, a lot to learn about android internals…

Free should work as many users are using it with /e.
May you share your apn configs (“Free Mobile” aka free & “Free Mobile MMS” aka freemms) ?

Here are the settings I have tried:

  • Free tutorials recommand: Name Free,APN free,MCC 208,MNC 15, APN type default,supl,hipri and Name Free MMS,APN mmsfree,MMSC http://mms.free.fr,MCC 208,MNC 15,APN type mms
  • I have a Moto G5 which works fine with a Free sim. The Free MMS APN is configured as above, but the Free APN description includes also the MMSC adress and mms is added in the liste of APN type.
*The installation set up of e/ is similar free tutorial, except the name Free is changed to Free Mobile and hipri is not mentioned in the APN type.
So far I tried all combinations using either IPV4 only or IPV4/IPV6 without success. I wonder why two APN must be declared while both internet and mms access can be described under one APN. It seems that some other carriers use only one APN. The default installation of e/ adds a third ims APN as ims type which I deleted. Could this cause the issue?

When I look at the built in apn for AOSP 14 (T) prebuilt/common/etc/apns-conf.xml · v1-t · e / os / android_vendor_lineage · GitLab I find under “Free”

<apn carrier="Free Mobile" mcc="208" mnc="15" apn="free" proxy="" port="" user="" password="" mmsc="" type="default,supl" />
<apn carrier="Free Mobile MMS" mcc="208" mnc="15" apn="mmsfree" proxy="" port="" user="" password="" mmsc="http://mms.free.fr" type="mms" />

Something of a guess, but I would think these would be significant to two different plans, and the correct line to use will depend on your plan; where “Free mobile” is a plan which excludes MMS and “Free Mobile MMS” does include MMS.

I have started to look into the log files, trying to check what happens during the startup. I have found this related to the radio stuff:

Here my config:

apn carrier="Free Mobile" mcc="208" mnc="15" apn="free" proxy="" port="" user="" password="" mmsc="http://mms.free.fr"" type="default,supl,mms"

apn carrier="Free Mobile MMS" mcc="208" mnc="15" apn="mmsfree" proxy="" port="" user="" password="" mmsc="http://mms.free.fr" type="mms"

APN Protocols are both set to IPv4/IPv6.

This is one setting I tested already.
I believe the problem is either an installation issue or relates to the compatibility of this latest e/ image and “radio” configuration/description files for/from my “Evert” hardware. I am probably the first to install this march 2025 image from scratch on a 2018 G6 Plus.

I had a look in the Dump files using adb and it confirms my suspicions.

Data is “out of service” and data technology “unknown” only voice is “in service” limited to UMTS, when it should be LTE.

Comparing with a running G5 under Google android 8.1
