/e/OS, OTA and "dirty" upgrades, when should I do what?

I’m a new /e/OS user and wonder how /e/OS updates work. For example, I have a Pixel 4a (sunfish), recently OTA-updated from /e/OS 3.0.1 to 3.0.4 (both Android 14). But there’s also a 3.0.4 with Android 15 available (but not via OTA). Will there be a OTA upgrade for it at some point in time? Or are Android upgrades like A14->A15 always unsupported and one have to do a “dirty” upgrade and hope the best? How should such a dirty upgrade be done? With adb commands? Or is it possible with a “local update” via the App? I’m sorry if I’m asking something completely obvious here, but I haven’t come across any instructions yet. I also have a FP6 here with (manually installed) official /e/OS and wonder if the same applies here, or if “official” always is OTA.

Is there perhaps a general guide somewhere?

True for community builds

This worked well for me and is really simple:

…device settings - updater - 3-dot menu in upper right corner: local update

Before doing so you need to download from source as linked by @piero of course.
