[FEATURE PROPOSAL] Auto-Archive Old Media Files with Cloud Sync (Like iOS)

Description:
I would like to request a new feature for the Gallery app in /e/OS: automatic local cleanup of old photos/videos that are already backed up to the cloud, while keeping thumbnails available for browsing.

Currently, to free up space, users must manually move files to a separate cloud folder, which is cumbersome. This feature would:

  1. Automatically detect photos/videos that are already synced to the cloud

  2. Delete the local full-resolution copies of these files after a configurable period (e.g., 30/60/90 days) or when local storage is low.

  3. Retain low-resolution thumbnails locally for quick browsing.

  4. Re-download the full-resolution file only when the user opens the photo/video (like iOS’s “Optimize Storage” feature).

Use Case:

  • Users with limited device storage (e.g., 64GB phones) can keep their entire media library accessible without manually managing files.

  • Seamless experience: No need to remember to offload old files.

@g.deruette If this was ever implemented I would prefer it to be an “Opt-In” option, & not “Opt-out” I don’t like services forced upon end the end user.
