Firefox and e/OS

Hi,

I am curious about e/OS and Firefox since I noticed that the installation page ( /e/OS Installer ) is not working if I try to access it with Firefox or Mullvad browser (Firefox-fork) and I tried with and without u-block active. In my experience it is extremely rare that pages is blocked for Firefox browser. The page worked fine to access with Brave browser.

I also noticed Firefox/forks are not default in the e/OS on the mobile. I am aware that Firefox has some questions-mark! about privacy last year when they changed their terms of conditions. Anyhow, without Firefox existence there would only be chromium (Google controlled) based browsers which would not be good in the long run I think. Anyhow, is there a reason e/OS is blocking Firefox/forks of it? / Happy to hear other views about Firefox.

Hi,

Firefox does not support WebUSB required by the installer :

Completely agree

the rationale of Mozilla not wanting to implement WebUSB is here:

As to the default Browser, Bromite/Cromite made sense at the time. You’ll probably find an old issue.. this one: Browser - why not Firefox? (#48) · Issues · e / Backlog · GitLab

Thank you for the links

the old issue entry doesn’t add much, too long ago (8 years) - at the time it was Jelly even.

There are sure more recent discussions, in this forum too.

One issue with the way /e/OS is bundled for install: webview and browser are on the system partition. Switching to Firefox - that needs more space than Cromite currently - would bar the use of /e/OS on more older devices. It’s a fixable matter though. I’d probably use Jelly again and do the browser install after setup (onto /data/).

I make sense, this functionality make the risk of hacking higher.
