Yes, I’d be very interested in helping organize an event. Anywhere between Bern and Interlaken (Switzerland). I’m not an expert, but a fan. And after enjoying a preinstalled Samsung S9, I’m in the progress of installing eOS on an Asus Zenfone. Would be excited to get together with likeminded and support conversion of phone owners to eOS.

Hi everyone,

I can’t open the easy-installer (under MacOS 13.0.1), and I would like to install e/os on a S9 (Samsung) that I just received.
I wanted to know if there were people around Lyon who could give me a hand?

I have an S7e that has been running perfectly on e/os for 2 years now.

Thanks a lot !

Hi @Manoj and @lu7 !

We are currently trying to organize such flash party in Lyon (France), for the beginning of April 2023.
If accepted, it would be part of the JDLL 2023: https://jdll.org/ (a yearly event on FOSS). We would be next to the existing install party (focused on computers, that already has a liability waiver paper to sign, that we might copy/adapt).

I’ve already flashed several devices around me, and unofficially flashed a couple of smartphones at the JDLL 2022. The other volunteer also has experience on flashing /e/ OS on devices.

To organize this, our idea would be to have a compulsory registration, for several reasons:

  • Know the exact models of devices, to filter the ones that are incompatible, the ones that should be easy (EasyInstaller), and the ones that might be difficult/risky. It should also allow us to download the necessary things before D day, ask the users to backup their data, and (for some models) ask for unlock keys
  • Be able to set time slots for each person/device: we would be only 2 persons available to do the installations, and we need to make sure the area will not be cluttered by people waiting

This registration might be setup with a simple https://framaforms.org/ , or maybe a https://pretix.eu/ event (that should handle timeslots too. But we don’t have any organization suitable to use their free SaaS offer, cf “Our services are only available to businesses and similar entities, not to consumers or end users.” in Pricing – pretix – Reinventing ticket sales for conferences, festivals, exhibitions, .... So we might need to self-host an instance
)

We are volunteers, and the registration/installation would be open to anyone, and 100% free.

Regarding the backup of phones, it would be good to provide an “official” procedure to do it. It’s in general pretty easy for Photos/Videos/Music/Documents, but much more difficult for the rest (OS settings, apps and their settings/data etc)

So together with a friend of mine I’m hosting a little Flash Party in Bern, Switzerland next week. :tada: The background simply is that I want to flash the latest version of /e/ on my phone, and I thought it’s more fun with more people. It’s a bit on short notice, and primarly geared towards friends, but I thought I’ll share it here and see what happens.

Here’s a info sheet (in German): https://murena.io/s/7dfxfFBT98asgtC

@debru this could be interesting to you?

Hi Raphi
Thanks so much for sharing the event! If it’s ok for you, I would like to keep it spontanious. I’m not working in Bern between Christmas and New Year, so the commute is quite far. Otherwise I might enjoy getting out of the house :stuck_out_tongue:

Hello ,

For people around Marseille / France,

We host eOS flashing parties and Linux install party every third saturday in Aubagne

Me too
maybe we should talk together and arrange something?

Sounds great! In the meantime, maybe you want to join next week in Bern? see post above.

Hello,

I am interested in Flash Parties for /e/OS !

I definitely am interested in having goodies or flyers or any other communication material to make our meeting more visible on-site ! Someone talked about t-shirts or was it hoodies ?

Next meetup is planned for next week, so it may be short to communicate widely about /e/OS flashing party.

I believe also to be cristal clear with people attending to avoid bad first experiences and dataloss as they discover /e/OS.
This is something LUG are familiar with as similar situation shall be overcome when first Linux installation is done on a laptop or PC, here is French “unliability document” used by Guilde: time to update “computer” with “any electronic device” .

As a sidenote, idea came on French post about Flashing Parties to have a map . So that, I started that on eOS Flashing Parties - uMap
(Do not hesitate to indicate if it has to be changed, updated, removed, it is just a “first draft” map.)

HTH,
Low Memory

I would also be more than happy to host such a party. Gathering attendance though
I think gaining visibility without using SoMe is generally really hard :person_shrugging:

You can add on the map the flash-party that @LePoissonLibre and I will do at next JDLL: April 1 and 2

I have just done it.
Do not hesitate to tell me if you want any presentation text or anything.

Thanks @LowMemory, but the map link now leads to an HTTP 404 error

If you put it back online, you can add the following information (in French):
“Inscription obligatoire: plus d’informations sur Flash-party /e/ OS aux JDLL 2023”

Thanks for info about 404 error!

As stated in this (French) post: Disparition de mes cartes sur Umap - uMap & Framacarte: créer / diffuser des cartes en - Forum OSM France , it seems it is a bug and maps may reappear.

I’ll add information on JDLL as soon as map comes back.

The map seems to be back

Thanks for letting me know. I go to my flashing party now !

Hopefully, I will have some time to modify it from there !

I have just added your eOS flashing parties.

Regards

Hi,

Here is an information about a new flash party :

  • in Toulouse (France)
  • “La Rebooterie”, 29 bis Avenue des Mazades, 31200 Toulouse
  • January, 27th, from 14h to 17h30

@Julien already created flash parties in this place with @e-media , years ago, and I’m continuing

I’ll explain how to back up and flash a phone, and if the phone is compatible, each participant will manipulate, at his own risks.
It is strongly recommanded to come with a computer, ideally a linux pc.
To register for the flash party, please write me an email to “degooglise.toulouse at framalistes dot org”.

“La Rebooterie” is an association, so the flash party is organized for the members, but the inscription fee is very low (10€ minimum for a year). Please contact them (https://larebooterie.fr/)

I plan to to organize those flash parties each month, usually, the last Saturday of the month.

Hi there,

In the east of the Netherlands, Oosterbeek to be precise, I and another Android enthousiast help people get /e/OS or LineageOS on their devices. We use the Repaircafé as the venue. To make it simple for us, we use the Easy Installer to get /e/OS or use Open Android Installer by Tobias Sterbak to get /e/OS or other custom ROMS (with TWRP). We donŽt provide in backups.
Unfortunately we havenÂŽt been able to flash phones yet. People came with phones that were too old and therefore not suitable for flashing, or came with questions nothing to do with flashing. We will continue though, but will inform the public better of what to expect.
We use promotional material from the Free Software Foundation. They have this project called Upcycling Android. I think this project is a very suitable flag to organize flash parties under.
