FP4 camera keeps stopping

Hi,

I installed eOS 3.0 on my fairphone 4 in July 2025 and have never looked back, very happy already then, and have followed updates since which have resolved several minor issues.

Now, when I installed eOS 3.5 (20260211580870-official-FP4) on another FP4 device I was surprised to find that the stock camera app does not work.

It opens and then shuts down again right away. Sometimes a message saying “Camera keeps stopping” giving option to click “App info” or “Close app” appears. I have tried clearing cache, restarting, and resetting device to no avail. Other apps like Open camera works fine, although not sure if both back cameras are available in that app?

I see similar unresolved posts on this forum ( Fairphone 4 e-os 3.3 camera not starting ). Does anyone have any insight into what might be happening here? Is it possible to reinstall the app through adb?

Looking forward to replies.

Cheers

Hello OttiSral,

I installed eOS 3.3 again on my Fairphone 4 bought with eOS, but stock Camera app again did not work and update to eOS 3.5 did not change anything. As some Fairphone 4 with eOS work with stock Camera app, and yours and mine do not work, may be there is more than one different hardware for the camera used by fairphone 4 ? I do not know, how to check this. I wrote several times to the fairphone support, there was one amswer, that a ticket was installed, bot no more replies, what to do. So i did not use the fairphone 4 with eOS any more.

Sorry to hear that it didn’t work out for you @Mollpatr . I have investigated a bit further and noticed that the stock /e/OS camera app seems to be a fork of the Open Camera app. On the FP4 device where stock /e/OS camera works, in the Open Camera app I can choose which back camera to use (normal and wide angle). While on the other FP4 device, where stocks /e/OS app does not open, in Open Camera I do not get the option to select between back cameras, the icon for selecting is simply not there, and I am locked to using the normal camera only.

I did try the cameras in Google Android before installing /e/OS, so I believe this is a software issue, but that doesn’t rule out there could be different hardware versions of the cameras still. If anyone knows how to determine the camera version I’m all ears.

Hello OttiSral,

i got now contact to Fairphone support and sent the whole conversation of my first Topic and from your second topic. Lets wait for the support answer, i will tell you.

Hello OttiSral,

last message from Fairphone support is: “Seems to be a software problem.
We do recommend that you use Open Camera and wait for the next update from Murena. “
which does not help, because moving messenger to or from one phone to another often needs a barcode reading out of the messenger, which always wants to open the stock camera (Which shows a black screen in our problem case.) and gives no choice to another camera app.

If there will be more information, i will tell here.

Hi OttiSral, I just updated my FP4 to eOS Version 3.6-a14 fro 12.3.2026, and now the camera works.

Because I reinstalled the eOS in the meantime, I need to lock the boot loader, which is unlocked actally. Maybe someone can tell me how to achieve this.

Kind Regards, Mollpatr
