Hi all.
had this problem a while ago. basically the app says the device has failed the security checks. I assumed that was because my bootloader was open, so i installed the official E/os/ and am on the latest version. The app is displaying the same message after a few weeks now. Contacted support, and they said they’ll raise the issue with IT (no help at all).
From my very limited understanding, the reason the checks fait is because e/os/ doesn’t have a google safety net? and the device is displayed as rooted? This issues been going on for a long time (here is a post from a couple years ago regarding the same issue UK Banking Apps - Starling Bank Not working)
at the start of the comments, the talk about installing Magisk and doing some Codey stuff, which I don’t like the sound of but might have to give a shot if I there is no other way. would this work, because some of the comments on that post suggest otherwise? and if so, how does it work?
My other solution is just running the starling app on another device indefinitely, alot easier, but i’d rather have it all on my FP5. any help appreciated, thanks!!
This has happened to me today. Tried reinstalling but the same thing happens when i reinstall. I am using a Pixel tablet onto which I installed e\os myself. Bootloader is locked.
I updated e\os two days ago and this seems to have been flagged by the app as a change to the OS.
Tried unmasking ip address and location but nothing (app doesn’t request ip so it’s moot, I guess).
Will contact Starling support tomorrow, but fully expect them to reject \e\os as a ‘rooted’ device, as others have previously reported.
Makes me unwarrantably angry that we basically live in a world where the usual mobile OS duopoly can force how apps work.
Just got off the phone to Starling support. The guy was very friendly and professional, but had no idea what \e\OS was. Said there was nothing they could do at their end to help.
What makes it worse is that logging in via a browser isn’t possible without the app (you need to scan a QR code with the app to login).
I’m fortunate in that I’ve not yet switched my phone to \e\OS, so the app is still running on it. It is my \e\OS Pixel that is the problem. I hope other people who are all in on \e\OS can get access to their money.
It suggests that the most recent OS update changed something that has triggered something in the Starling app. This is the first time this has happened to me on \e\OS, so this may be commonplace for longer-term users.
Hi Mihi, What do you mean? Are you talking about leaks? Personally I use Starling because it is one of the only banks that invests in more ethical things. Tridos is the alternative, which is a better bank, but their app also does not work. And Starling seem pretty privacy orientated.
Yes Revolut is not a privacy friendly bank in general…
No, I meant they changed their ‘policy’ towards custom ROMS making it unuseable for a lot of people. Getting back to them brought nothing but waste of time.
In a strange twist people are reporting that after one year it works again but tell that to the people who weren’t able to access their accounts…
Not spreading fear just trying to share experience
I find it annoying that the apps are locked into the OS duopoly but the reality is that moving bank is no small issue, especially if it is for a business, charity or joint account you hold with someone else.
Fact is that these banks are using features that are baked into the OSs for their development convenience. To make the apps ‘secure’, they are end up creating dependencies on blobs of code built by Google or Apple. Expecting banks to support custom ROMs, when this is but a fraction of their user base, is naive.
All of this underscores big tech’s cultural power over us. Everyone here wants to get away from these companies so we often go the extra mile. For most other people, they’re trapped. And unless eOS or another can mitigate these problems, ‘normal’ users will not switch. It is an uphill battle all the time.
There seems a user acceptance also of using these “Banks” (is it just for “convenience”, idk). This is not a bank with some “solid foundation” as would be perceived only 20 years ago but just a “money_go_round” which is also apparently perfectly acceptable to Regulators – perhaps like another step from the once horror “what money is not backed by Gold?”.

I have the same experience as a first time e/os user setting up a new Fairphone 6.
I emailed Starling explicitly asking if they would be addressing this issue but they responded with the typical “custom roms not compatible with with our app security” and a link to what devices are compatible.
It is not working for me either. I tried to reinstall as well.
I have been on e os for the past 1.5 years and it was working fine until now. I am incapacitated by it and had to install the app on an old standard android phone.
I contacted the customer service and was told custom ROMs are not supported and I should use normal android installation.
I am on unofficial build, I wonder whether the official flavour with locked bootloader works.
A bank switch may be needed but this is a business account and it is a bit complicated.
It looks like Monzo never had any issues with compatibility…
Thanks for posting about your experiences. I’m all in favour of moving bank, as many other people suggest, but it’s not so easy when you’ve a business or joint account. I totally agree with you.
