Help; Can't seem to unlock bootloader, difficulty with installation

Hello all,

Second evening at this, help really appreciated.

I’m attempting to download E onto a CMF Phone 1, using the web installer. It has Android 14 pre installed, brand new phone. Am using Brave for the download, in Windows. Not a private window.

I’m following all the steps, in fact I’ve checked the steps around 5 times at this point…

  • Build number tapped 7 times.
  • Developer Options; On.
  • OEM unlocking; On. (OEM unlocked)
  • USB debugging; Enabled.
  • Allow USB debugging; enabled on phone.
  • File transfer enabled.

/E/ OS then downloads, after connecting to the phone.

The problem is that after the download, I selected ‘connect,’ for the Bootloader connection and got an error message. The phone rebooted to the start page and froze. Gave it 10 mins and then went to the reboot screen manually.

Still couldn’t connect the computer to the phone with the Bootloader Connection.

Below is a screenshot of the phone after downloading E to computer, and going to reboot manually.

Looks like the phone may still be locked?

What OS? What was the error message?

If Windows + Error on step: connect-bootloader

[Solved] Windows does not see my phone in Fastboot mode

OS on phone? As mentioned, pre installed with Android 14. OS on computer, Windows.

The error message is that the installer cannot connect to the phone, via bootloader. I’ll type the exact wording when the error comes up again. Am attempting another install at present.

Sorry but did you read the link? It is for just that situation.

I’ll try that, when I get to the bootloader part of the installation.

The error is;

Error on step: connect-bootloader

“Cannot execute command connect bootloader
The device is not connected Failed to connect: Cannot connect Bootloader
Proposal: Check connection and that no other program is using the phone and retry”

The phone is stuck on startup, ie ‘CMF, powered by Android.’
So the phone attempts to reboot, but doesn’t.

Could it therefore be an issue with the phone?

Maybe but

The little help guide is for just this situation and is actually what I predicted in my first reply. As said there, just check Windows Device manager and see if the phone appears as a :warning: Problem device if yes follow the guide to get the full driver set.

Ok, I can’t download updates for Windows 10. Just get a message saying support has finished.

I have downloaded SDK Platform Tools, but don’t know how to run it?

I’m going to muscle on with this and try and figure it out; to anyone thinking of purchasing a device purely to install /E/ OS, I’d say it may be best to either buy a device with /E/ pre installed, or use a compatible phone that you already have.

For the non technical minded with little time to spare like myself, it may be a headache and just not worth it.

Hopefully, I’ll get it running. If not, I’ll have to sell the phone and lose money as well as time.

Some words on platform-tools Installing adb and fastboot on Windows PC

You did find Fastboot drivers missing then? If yes, you may be able to update Windows 10 drivers like this Install Android USB Driver, ADB, and Fastboot on Windows 10/11 (2026) – Step-by-step instructions to install the Android USB driver and set up ADB/Fastboot using winget on Windows 10/11. Bravo.

If you get a quiet moment to read some eosinstaller ( ← is a link) threads you will see many comments on difficulties not helped by there being no documented way to get a log from the installer in the event of difficulties. Seems the installer does show an output on the PC screen in the event of some situations. Try to quote the error if asking for help. Some cmf-phone-1 threads are also informative.

Many times as Post #6 we have advised to abandon the installer and use the regular install page Install /e/OS on a Nothing Nothing CMF Phone 1 - “tetris”.

There are many here prepared to help, please keep asking, as specific as possible, one step at a time.

Good luck

Thank you, I do appreciate it. Will try to get the drivers installed for Win 10 this evening.

Looks like the issue may well be the Win 10 drivers (lack of), preventing me from getting past that step.

If that fails, I’ll try doing a dual boot of Linux on my computer, and installing /e/ from there.

The thread will be closed in a couple of days by the looks of it, so may have to start other threads.

So have Microsoft ended all past updates for Win 10?

On the link you provided, does the command cause the drivers to automatically download? If so, where are they downloaded from?

Yes, I am computer illiterate.

No.

The method requires some reading. See if Step 1. is understandable and doable and go ahead.

The driver comes from Google and you download it at Step 2. #1.

Do as the link says

There are two ways to download the Google USB Driver for Windows:

  • Download the Google USB Driver ZIP file (ZIP).

Where I copied the first.

(Do that, no need for the other.)

OK, I’ll give that a go later.

Thank you.

While Windows say that W10 is EOL a family member says he will not use (paid for) W11 and W10 works fine.

I guess it may be worth double checking that you are using one of the various driver update techniques correctly.

reported from 2025-10 to 2026-10… …

I’m not sure this is suitable in your situation but often jou can find the right driver for windows using the ‘optional opdates’ option once you have connected you phone in fastboot mode.

Because you have to install this manually, the webinstaller fails.

Don’t give up, you will manage, just as I did but it can be very frustrating indeed!
