I need some help

Hi,

I am buying a new Fairphone, since my 3+ one is dying, but I don’t know whether to buy the Android version or the e/os version. The thing is a need to make a quick decision, since my phone is really about to die, but right now I am ten days away from a very important exam, so I don’t have the time to read much about e/os. I apologize for my very basic questions:

Is e/OS easy to use for someone who is not tech-savyy?

Would I be able to use the same apps I am using now or some of them might not be avaible for e/OS? (Banking, travelling, email, streaming… Nothing really “special”).

Would it be easy to transfer my Google backup to the new phone? Or should I make a backup using a different… I don’t even know the right word… software?

Is there anything else I should be considering?

I would appreciate any comments/opinions and, again, I am sorry for asking for this kind of advice, but I am on a tight schedule.

Best!

María

Hi Ruska,

For your daily apps e/os works fine in my experience. They’re not as far along in developing as smooth an experience as apple or android and some apps may require some instructions (app lounge) but there are workarounds usually and it comes with the benefit of not becoming their product to sell.

If you’re not an experienced user I’d buy a preinstalled e/os phone from the store. That should also ensure that it’s supported and will continue to be for some time. (Should be mentioned for how long)

Other than that you could search the forum whether there are any problems with the apps that are important to you. For banking apps there is a list.

Don’t expect banking Apps to work 100% all the time on /e/OS.
Even if you find reports of your particular banking App working right now, this is not guaranteed and can break at any time for any amount of time.

The same is also true in general for every App which would expect to find Google background services on the phone (which are most Apps in existence), but banking Apps are the most difficult to get to work consistently on /e/OS.

In this case, stick with the Google certified stock OS by the phone manufacturer for now to not break any of your use cases, and then read up on /e/OS later (a lot) when you have the time. You can still install /e/OS later.

Thanks for your help, AnotherElk and Jowomu!! Much appreciated! :raising_hands:

Hello,

Some banking apps work perfectly fine; you should check the compatibility list.

For example, I closed my Revolut account because the app wasn’t working, and I switched to Fortuneo (a French bank that also offers a free account).
