I am aware that this is not exactly what You are asking for, but if it is about the convenience to do SMS from the desktop/laptop You might want to try My Phone Explorer (combo of mobile app + desktop app) meanwhile (it works well!).

You just need to have wifi and link your phone and computer with KDE Connect. I always have the same wifi.
Can confirm that MyPhone Explorer works wonderfully over a VPN…mostly.
The one thing I’ve had to do is to set a static route on my computer so that the computer knows to use my VPN server as the next stop on the static route - “route add 10.0.8.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.2” from an elevated command prompt, set MPE to use the VPN IP of the phone, and it works FLAWLESSLY.
