My first few days with Fairphone 4 & e/OS/ - Fantastic!

First few days with Fairphone 4 and e/os/ and I’m giddy with delight. Seriously.

Recently migrated PCs off Windows to Linux, went fantastic. Next step in deGoogle was to work on the phone, a bigger challenge.

After much research hours spent & a fun but failed experience elsewhere, thought I would try a Fairphone 4 preloaded with e/os, purchased thru Murena.

My expectations kept in check, prepared to exchange some conveniences for sake of more privacy. No problem.

First impressions after a few days is I’m super impressed. Now, admittedly I am a basic phone user, likely less needs than many. I of course need cell and text, but only about 6 apps. I do not need or use cloud services (though I’m aware of the recent cloud issues).

Everything has just worked. My two main banking apps, both work just fine. Was concerned primarily with those, though could and was prepared to use web access if needed.

In a rural area of central northern USA, Mint Mobile (T-mobile) works as well or a notch better than prior phone.

Magic Earth maps used for a longer road trip for a lunch meet, and works perfectly.

Niagara, an elegant & minimalist launcher I have used for years works nicely. Super bonus.

The Advanced Privacy details/wall of shame is just freaking amazing. And at same time, disheartening lol… Banking app has a tracker I’m not pleased with. My music app is sadly riddled with them.

But this is exactly the kind of information I need & can use to make decisions going forward. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Migrate to apps & companies that respect our privacy.

Just a quick & HUGE thanks to everyone at Murena & e/os, making this possible for those of us who don’t want to mess with ROMs, etc as much as possible, is truly amazing. Am hopeful they can get the cloud issues sorted and improved, I may not use them, but understand its a basic requirement for many.

Looking forward to the future here.

Welcome to our world

I switched to Linux 2006, some years later I found FairPhone2, later FP3 + /e/, now recently FP5 + Murena (I dropped my FP3 on a stone, too much damage to main board…) after messing a bit with LineagOS, and my spare phone runs Jolla Sailfish.

Regarding syncing there are many ways, especially with free software.
I use Syncthing so I basically immediately have photos I take with the phone, on my desktop.
Then my desktop syncs it to my own cloud. That way I am not much dependant on cloud or internet connection to my computer.

Syncthing also syncs some select folders on some laptops, and some use nextcloud client for syncing to my rented Nextcloud server.
Syncthing is hands down superior in reliability and features (i.e staggered versioning) for file sync, except it do not work with any other server/cloud, but you can have an “always on” node yourself to sync to.

Another neat app is KDEConnect, especially for Linux KDE/Plasma but also other desktops, and Andriod and derivatives: easy manually transfer files, control multimedia, send clipboard, remote control, and other tricks.

What I currently miss is my old notes in the notes app, else I am fine.

Some other notes on syncing: Murena cloud syncing in one or two directions?

BTW I am using Mageia, descendant of another creation of Gael Duval: Mandrake Linux.

It’s always a pleasure for me to read English from native English speakers
(i am french)
I’m happy for you that you found a solution that matches your needs working fine.
I also find /e/os as a great project, and Murena services too, hoping they will gain momentum.
