New Murena Pixel Tablet

Although I appreciate the probable availability from January, I miss very much:

  • regrettably no battery that can be easily changed by the user

  • a statement how many years it will be supported with software updates (patches and major Android versions) beside the two year standard warranty given in the EU

I really can’t believe that this dream is coming true! A tablet without all this bloatware and tracker rubbish? I mean, anyone who has ever tried to be happy with the unspeakably bad devices from Apple, Samsung, Huawei and whatever they’re all called knows how big the gap between terrible and usable has been so far!

And this at a time when we’ve been discussing the problems and downfall of Murena for months? Somehow that sounds too good to be true…!

Just a few years ago, I lost well over a thousand euros on popular ‘Jolla tablets’ because they were never delivered. As far as I know, the equally privacy-friendly tablets from Volla have still not been delivered to pre-order customers…

Should I really dare to pay for Murena tablets in advance? Will they really be delivered in January?

I don’t think they won’t be delivered but yeah sure who can predict the delivery date.

It is not a Kickstarter campaign or anything it is listed in the shop…

@Doppel-D

a statement how many years it will be supported with software updates

in the FAQ:

Q: How many years will you support your phones with software updates?

A: We aim to support with at least 5 years of software updates and security patches.

Google Pixel Tablet (what it seems to be based on) is at a “minimum of June 2028 security patches” - Get software updates on your Pixel Tablet and Charging Speaker Dock - Google Pixel Tablet Help - so 5 years possible but not guaranteed.

Laws in EU will change mid 2025 as to if you can sell new devices without 7 years update/sec-patches support.

It’s a good hardware choice still for winter 2024 - the industry hasn’t got anyones back anyway.

The Google Pixel C tablet has still unofficial Lineage 20 builds (Android 13) based. The device is now 9 years old and Android 13 will be approximately supported until early 2026 which is then nearly 11 years of software support. I would assume for the pixel tablet the same software support range at least for unofficial releases

btw. I did an unofficial release for the Pixel C for /e/OS-T some time ago:

If so, for the price called not long enough…at least for me

Direct link to the shop…

Official support =/= unofficial support

They don’t arg about photo quality…

appreciate your builds  sure I agree in spirit and as a hobbyist, but…

...

… we both know, the periphery is unaccounted for, any firmware on those boards will not see fixes. For phones you’d care about the modem and gpu where vulnerabilites are leveraged most often.

The last manufacturer OTA published for the Pixel C was mid 2019, it started selling end of 2015. In that narrow sense of software support for all hardware components that is barely 4 years of support. I’m being picky for the sake of argument.

Google made lots of efforts over the years for OEMs to offer longer hardware support, but relies on an industry that makes money selling new chips, not being good opensource citizens.

In my own perspective it doesn’t matter if the hardware goes out of firmware support in 3, 5 or 7 years - it’s a crooked setup anyway buying closed source hardware blobs. Even with 7 years the devices loose support before they’re unusuable by capability.

OK, I pre-ordered a Murena Tablet!

If Murena fails - it’s not because of me: Bought 2 Murena phones, paid for the 1TB cloud account for several years and now bought a tablet. Plus several donations in between and lots of advertising among family and friends.

I can’t as well … It is quite a surprise, after pestering @Manoj for so long, it poppep up without any warning
On one hand I am happy it has finally arrived , on the other hand I wished it had been released earlier (I resorted to a refurbished 4G tablet, set up by @piero :+1: ).
I will have a look…

Thinking about the potential use of the Murena Tablet … can it be used for work related activities?
Skimming through the list [LIST] Apps that work or do not work with microG I have the impression that it would be hard to get
MS Outlook
MS Teams
MS Authenticator
MS Intune
Cisco Anyconnect
working, or am I wrong?

Thank you for your feedbacks

I don’t think it would make sense to use these Microsoft apps on a tracker-free tablet.

Based on my /e/OS smartphones in recent years (FP4/FP5), I can say that I at least used MS Outlook for business (as a web link in the Brave browser), I didn’t want to install the app because of its massive access.

In any case, I would rather buy any cheap tablet for business use - and not the Murena tablet. Somehow it doesn’t make sense to me to first buy an elaborately liberated, clean and privacy-friendly /e/OS product and then use it with apps that are full of trackers and demand excessive permissions.

I understand your point @Shakatus , but if I could not exploit it for business purposes, it might not worth buying it, since for personal use, I am happy with the tablet @piero set up (Samsung Tab S5e, 4G version)…

Hi everybody, Hi /e/OS team,

it seems that this tablet arrives at the right time for me since I need to change my very old one.
But I would have one question before pre-order it: is it possible to share screen & sound with a TV?
I ask because with my A5 2017, share my phone’ screen on my TV is not possible. So I won’t buy the tablet if unfortunately it’s not possible.

Thanks for your answer

It’s here! Today my new Murena Tablet arrived!

Although I didn’t expect to actually get it in January, it’s still here in December!

First impressions are good! What strikes me: The bootloader is not locked and a warning message appears (“Another system is loading”). The Bliss Launcher is still causing a number of problems.

But basically I’m very happy to have my familiar /e/OS environment on the tablet!

Is the screen in landscape mode centered? Probably…

should be locked according to the shop-info (“Bootloader locked: Yes”)

When switching the tablet on the message “This device is loading a different operation system” appears with a link to visit. After that the booting process continues to /e/OS. As far as I remember, this is a sign of an open bootloader.

Yes, but there is a problem with the favorits. These apps disappear after a while. I installed KISS Launcher, which ist working fine.

There are various ways to check whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked, e.g.

fastboot getvar all

Possible responses:
(bootloader) unlocked: no
(bootloader) unlocked: yes
