Hello @Lenar
Don’t expect that /e/OS will be available for all smartphones on the market - there are simply too many devices coming out and several manufacturers do not want their devices to be used with other operating systems.
There is another well-known custom ROM called LineageOS. /e/OS can easily be generated for devices where LineageOS is already available.
If you find a device being listed here or here it is pretty likely that the device will get /e/OS support as well (sooner or later).
The easiest is to check those lists before you purchase a device.
In general, I’d advise to keep the following things in mind:
Fairphone, Google and Motorola make it easy to have their devices being used with custom ROM. That’S why /e/OS is available on many devices from those manufacturers
Samsung and OnePlus made it easy in the past, there devices were very popular among custom ROM developers, but nowadays that NOT the case anymore. That’s why /e/OS is available mostly for elder devices of this two manufacturers.
Custom ROMs need quite some adaptation work for each and every device. That’s why recently published devices will not (yet) have neither /e/OS nor LineageOS support (as it simply takes some time to build a custom ROM).
Yes a lot of manufacturers make it not possible to unlock the bootloader. That’s the first thing that throws a spanner in the works. It seems the phones from Asian based companies are the worst offenders. Phones from companies based in the EU or USA tend not to perma-lock the bootloader.
The next thing that stops alternative ROMs are specialized binaries required for hardware support. Those are proprietary and the only way to get them is from the maker. They have to supply those upon request and they’re never in any hurry to do that, if it all.
So if you can unlock the bootloader and obtain the necessary binaries, there’s the fact that people building these ROMs are typically volunteers. They’re not going to waste their time building a ROM for a phone that’s not popular.
You simply can’t buy an arbitrary phone and have any expectation. You have to reference the support list and buy a phone based on that.
