No reboot after upgrade

Dear all,
I have /e/ OS running on a Samsung Galaxy S9 since 2021. I did not receive upgrades for long time but then suddenly did again. I then installed the latest version which was probably a mistake. Now the phone does not boot anymore. It enters in e-recovery mode. It seems that TWRP is not available anymore and has been replaced by e-recovery.

Is there a way to backup the data on the phone? (I cannot connect to the PC in e-recovery mode)
Can I use the easy installer to get the latest e-Version running on the device?

I am not very experienced with custom ROMs and would appreciate your support very much!

This is now the default behaviour. It is adjusted in the System updater.

Updater > top right 3 dot menu > Update recovery.

Is you PC Windows or Linux? If / when you have platform tools installed on you PC SDK Platform Tools release notes  |  Android Studio  |  Android Developers is your phone accessible? You may be able to use adb pull command to retrieve files and folders https://adbshell.com/. Have you been using your Murena.io cloud account, this would contain a useful backup but excludes certain apps and those you installed yourself.

Once you have an adequate backup you may try Factory reset from e-Recovery and see if /e/OS will now restart.

Were you previously running an Official / stable ROM Different Build Types. Were you previously running Android 10 (Q)?

Thank you!

My PC runs on linux. I installed adb android tools. I succeeded to connect to the phone. I can also use the pull command as suggested but /storage and /sdcard directories seem to be empty where I suspected my personal data to be stored. Am I looking in the wrong directories?

I also used an sdcard reader to access the sdcard directly on my PC but the folders seem to be empty. At least I cannot find any user data. Is it possible that data were deleted during upgrade?

I did not use Murena cloud services. They were not available at the time I flashed /e/OS on my device.

I was running a stable/official ROM. Unfortunately I do not remember the exact Android version but I started in 2020 first.

No, You might experiment with adb root then adb shell but I can ls without root and find my stuff in /sdcard.
Even a Factory reset is not expected to delete data from an Externally installed, that is Portable SD card.

However if the card was installed as Internal, this has been reported to be the cause of difficulties at Upgrade and the card may not be readable out of the device. Some explanation on this subject ✏ A little guide to... using SD cards - Guides - Fairphone Community Forum.

Do you think your SD card was installed as Internal?

If you return the SD card to the phone, does it affect your ability to read /sdcard with adb?

What version is shown In e-Recovery?

Different phone, but I suggest you compare your experience with what we are seeing in this thread Need help - S7 freezes all the time

One would expect delivered for the Samsung Galaxy S9 the following

Nougat (A7)  -> Q (A10)
Oreo   (A8)  -> Q (A10)
Q      (A10) -> R(A11)
R      (A11) -> S(A12)

I assume at some stage you missed an OTA Upgrade, lets say it was Android 10 (Q) - Android 11 (R) missed. Lets say then the phone receives the offer of Android 11 (R) to Android 12 (S). This is only capable of upgrading from Android 11 (R), but in our assumption your phone is still on Android 10 (Q); this seems to have become an impossible situation.

While in the thread linked above I tried to experiment with a “reconstruction”, maybe that is just to hard and the easier thing would be to Revert Samsung Device to stock ROM on Windows PC then start again. This method results in loss of all data on the phone. So getting some data off the phone is probably a priority for you.
