Not possible to use 5G SIM, not possible to manually config APN

Hi,
I got a new SIM-Card for my Samsung Galaxy Note S8 smartphone.
Latest /e/ version is installed.
Phone has worked OK for phoning, SMS, mobile data access etc. before using 4G with no issue.

Problem:
After I insert new SIM card, restart phone, re-enter SIM-card acces (PIN), I only get a welcome message and nothing happens. Not possible to use phone neither for phoning nor for mobile data access (SMS greyed out, phone greyed out).

I learned that sometimes it can happen with an Android phone (though I have NEVER experenced this before with any old Android phone) that SIM card is not properly installed, so phone SIM card provider tells me to either send an SMS for getting installation data (which does not work) or config a manual APN access.
Unfortunately, this does not work.
I get “Die Einstellungen für den Zugangspunkt sind für diesen Nutzer nicht verfügbar.” (“Settings for this access point are not available for this user.”)
I go into settings → search for APN. Click “+” to add a new APN access point.
It is not possible to enable APN slider, it is possible to make an entry/selection for all points but not possible to use it.

What is broken here?
Please do not tell me to install latest /e/ because I did that.
Please do not ask if SIM phoning has ever worked before because it has been working nicely for years until now.

Thanks and regards.

Further to this:
I cannot select to manually select a mobile grid, it loads forever afterwards. It is nearly impossible to exit the “Mobilfunknetz auswählen” screen, it is kind of locked.

Is a known issue … I believe it is important to have a good Wi-Fi connection while doing this … carriers will vary, but at least some will attempt to verify (over Wi-Fi) that you are setting their valid APN.

How hopeless … in the case of no connection it is up to them to send you the “special” text that will include APN reset.

These days I think there is some Google magic involved to aid quick resolution of APN … it can take some users a bit of patience as seen in other apn threads.

Of course the 5G might compound things … just for clarity … this was an old SIM:

… was the aim to get a new 5G capable SIM and this is the start of the problem?

Any clues in this thread [LIST] Carriers that work or do not work with /e/OS country-wise maybe if you share the carrier name someone using that service will chip in.

Just in case you have a problem at this point which many users had/have … the manually entered APN settings need to be saved first, and the save button is in the 3 dot menu (top right).

Hi,
step by step editing and saving in turns helped. First I selected a name for the APN and a few settings, then saved it. This time I could save the APN under that name. I then added more of the settings and finally ended up with a complete APN that somehow worked.

What I still did not get:
In the APN settings:
MNC keeps resetting to 23, although I manually enter 07.
APN-type autoset itself to hipri, fota, cbs, xcap, additionally to default, mms and supl that I entered before.
IN the actual phone settings in “Network & Internet” → “SIM-Cards”:
Sometimes after selecting this I get a blank screen showing nothing. But then I get the SIM settings: “Call settings” is greyed out and so is “SMS-settings”, but I can phone so. SMS sending to phone provider failed. I’ll have to check with a proper phone number.

Why would the Call settings and SMS-settings be greyed out if they apparently do work somehow?

I’m not 100% sure but I think I read a restart of the phone may also help.

Maybe progressive saving is causing your carrier to substitute wrong settings ?? or settings which are not a match with your plan.

However the positive is that you are making progress to full connection.

You can always start a New APN page and try to get it exactly right before Save. The first field “Name” is non critical so “My Setting 2” would be ok … then select this when finished.

you got one of the new “5g” SIMs by drillisch / 1und1 ? they used to roam with telefonica (07 mnc), but no more, it’s their own network now

Yes, it is from drillisch / 1&1.
They wrote to me that they would switch their mobile grid to 5G which requires updated SIM cards. So they sent to me a 5G SIM card which my phone cannot actually make full use of, as the Galaxy Note S8 supported up to 4G only, which did not matter much for me and has always been working nicely nevertheless.

It seems the phone has settled now with the new SIM card, although still I do not really understand why I should not have been able to simply continue to use my old SIM card 4G until the phone breaks. Also I have no idea why I had to edit some config data manually to make the phone work again. I have changed SIM cards a number of times with this phone and others, it never was an issue.

The issue is that when I actually created the full config in one session it was not possible to save it. I had to start all over again. So that is why I tried stepwise attempt which apparently worked somehow.

Why SMS and Call settings still are greyed out although both work - no idea.
