Notification light Fairphone 6

I have a Fairphone 6 with 4.0-a15-20260610633983-official-FP6 /e/os installed. I have a setting where I can adjust the notification “light” (I assume it’s a part of the always on display) but it seems to work irregularly. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I also have AODNotify, but I would rather have the /e/os version and remove the extra app.

Is this feature working and should it be reliable (and am I doing something wrong or not understanding it?) or is it not fully implemented?

You might want to clarify: Is it irregularly with notifications from one and the same app? Or is it that notifications from some apps work, but from other apps do not?

Asking because the latter could be related to permissions.

Thanks. For me it’s irregular since sometimes I see the light for a minute, sometimes a bit longer, sometimes not at all. I don’t think it’s app specific, I haven’t noticed a pattern with which notifications it works. How can I check the permissions for the light? I’ve set for which apps it should work, is that enough?

I thought of individual app settings (Settings > Apps > …), but I guess the settings you made already covered that :+1:

Another FP6 user here. I’m not sure what exactly you mean by the notification ‘light’. When it works where and how does it appear? Which setting is it that you say you can adjust?

Fun fact, I can’t find the setting anymore, I found it before by searching the settings and I was really happy there was one. You could select the apps you wanted the light for.

And once in a while there will be a white small circle in the upper right corner of the screen which pulsates/blinks when there is a notification.

Ok, I think I found out why it’s so irregular. It seems to be the blue dot indicating an app is accessing the location services. And since I use WG Tunnel to check if I’m connected to my home WiFi, it will sometimes do this when a notification is shown. So although I still hope that it’s the notification light, I’m getting convinced it, unfortunately, is not.

I’ve just checked and can see that if you do a search in Settings for ‘light’, the first result will take you to the ‘Notification light’ settings screen.

I’ve only had my FP6 2-3 months and hadn’t switched this on after I discovered there was no LED and no way to have different colour lights for different apps as there is on my FP3+.

I’ve turned it on now so I can test it.

Let me know if you see the light as well. I think I’m wrong and it’s not a notification light, but maybe you could prove me right.

And maybe there will be a native notification light, since the dot for the access to the location service is shown on the display.

For a few apps I’ve set the notification light to show as ‘always on’, including when the screen is on.

For these apps I’ve so far seen no notification light when receiving notifications for Mail, Missed Call, and Proton Calendar. Will carry on monitoring.

This open GitLab issue suggests that ‘Always-on display’ is missing in /e/os for the FP6.

The ‘Notification light’ settings screen found through ‘Search’ doesn’t appear under any of the Settings menus. Swiping up from the bottom of the screen when it’s displayed and then tapping the icon above it shows it to be part of ‘LineageOS settings’.

It seems that although you can set the notification light here to be on, there’s no means for it to be displayed if it requires ‘Always-on display’.

Thanks for digging that up. Appartenly AODNotify has to use the workaround too, but I never noticed a lot of battery drain. Thanks for the help and hopefully it will be added in a feature /e/os update.
