Hello, the difficulties of 1/2 FA becomes really impossible for me with the degoogled fairphone4. Living in India. What do you advice? Having a second cheap phone only for google authenticator or other simpler way?
2/ which banking apps ?,
reaching a limit after a few years…of being happy with my degoogled phone. Thank you.
For me, zero banking apps. Check out if you can use any certain bank from the default Browser … by open the banks website, go to top right 3 dot menu > scroll well down > Add to Home screen.
If the bank allows “Add Shortcut to Home screen” and login works from this shortcut then it is a fairly good clue that the bank will cooperate without an app.
If “Add to Home screen” leads to Install app, then (like Revolut for instance) I would not use the service.
Thank you for your reply.
I was thinking of PayTM which works widely in India- (next to googlepay).
I tried to avoid them but if possible it would make it easier as sometimes it is the only way to pay. Or is it impossible?
As for bankapps , yes many questions…also for social credit which might come in the future. How to navigate this?
Well PayTM (in UK) prompts me to download the app, so I disregard this and it does allow “Add shortcut” so would you feel happy testing it like this?
I feel you have to deal with each of the financial bits individually and specifically.
In UK I have the sense that many organisations are sensitive to many users liking apps for “convenience” but also other users who are more interested in security so many organisations cater for both. However if the organisation is enforcing apps for their convenience I just stay away.
From your “Short cut” I guess you would just have to follow their online help to find out to what extent it works.
And / or you might use the same website on a laptop if that might be more easy to explore and login. Clearly a web site like this cannot work without an account and login.
I think people are generally obsessed with apps. Keep in mind there was a time where everything had to be done through a browser. Apps can provide a more fine tuned experience with respect to the aspect of a cell phone display, but certainly it’s possible to do things through the phone’s browser instead.
Personally I do all of my banking through a browser, but that’s on a PC. I don’t do banking on my phone. I have zero trust in the security of a phone. As it is we have to go to some great lengths just to get privacy and that’s outranked by security.
@Nathalie - the previous discussion was on banking things - but as to your 1) point: 2FA with Google Authenticator - you can replace GA and import the TOTP codes into Aegis. Even use Aegis then as 2FA to login to a Google account. Or what is the painpoint in using 2FA specifically?
as to 2) the feedback on PayTM was positive as far as 2022 (1, 2). You’d want to check your microG settings for disabled options if something fails to run.
