Problems installing /e/ OS on Oneplus 3 - can't boot into the /e/ recovery mode

Hello, I am having problems installing /e/ OS.

I have followed the official howto found here
[link] Install /e/OS on a OnePlus 3 / 3T - “oneplus3” [/link]

I have OEM unlocked the phone and successfully flashed the recovery image using

 fastboot flash recovery recovery-e-2.2-r-20240719418592-dev-oneplus3.img

The problem that I have is to boot into the /e/ recovery mode. No matter what I do I end up in the fastboot of Oneplus recovery mode.

After the flash I issue

 fastboot reboot

then I keep pressing the volume down and power button.
I also tried to power the device off and the power it on while pressing the volume down and power buttons. Still the same result.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi @detomassino welcome to the /e/ forum.

You need to find a way to change from fastboot to your new recovery without a normal shutdown / reboot cycle.

A normal shutdown / reboot cycle will cause you newly flashed Recovery to be overwritten.

On a OnePlus One the button press to leave fastboot is Volume Down + Power.

The button press to enter Recovery is also Volume Down + Power.

So you bring the phone down from fastboot, as the screen goes black you relax your fingers for a moment, then replace them where they were.

It may not work the first time, but hopefully you will perceive the best way to get control without the phone actually rebootling.

I don’t know the OnePlus 3, but if it has a Fastboot Menu as it looks here you may be able to slide gracefully out of Fastboot to Recovery by navigation of the Menu with Volume buttons.

You’re not following the instructions!
Step 5. in the recovery install guide you do correctly.
Step 6. is to power off the device and boot the recovery with button press combination.vol down + pwr.

You can temporarily unplug device to power off and plug back in when you get recovery booted.
I used to have a 3T but I can’t remeber what the fastboot mode screen looked like. There may be an option to power off.

When you get the recovery booted remember to re-plug before sideloading

Hello, thank you for your reply.

I did what you said.

  1. I flashed the recovery image
  2. I pressed the Volume down + Power
The top menu in the fastboot started to cycle through Recovery mode, Start, Power off for a few seconds and the the screen turned black.
  3. I release the Volume down+Power for a moment and the pressed them again.
From this point the screen stayed black and nothing happened, I left the phone for 5 minutes.

Pressing the power button brought the fastboot menu up…

BTW, I think I broke the phone as the normal boot to android is not working anymore, neither is the Oneplus recovery mode. When any of these two options are selected the phone just boots into fastboot menu

Hello Chris,
Thank you for your reply.
I still can’t get it going.

After flashing the recovery image I unplugged the cable and turned the phone off.
Then turned it on by combination of Volume down + Power buttons.
At the bottom is the shot of the screen that came up for a little while.

After that the screen went dark and nothing happened.

I tried different combinations of powering the phone off by button and then by an option in the fastboot menu, still the same result.

At the top left of that screen it says " more options press vol buttons".

There might be opion for recovery

Normally one selects with vol button

Confirm with short press pwr

Yes, there is an option. When selected, it boots with Oneplus logo for 2 seconds and then returns to fastboot.

Sorry Iain, I didn’t realise I had jumped in; didn’t notice you had replied already! :grimacing:

You may be just not getting the technique with buttons right. Try to be gentle and when doing the combo
hold the vol down first and keep holding it
then press power but release it as soon as you feel the phone doing something.
If screens start showing you should be able to release the vol button as well.

You need to reflash, and then choose the option to boot the new recovery

Thank you, Chris.
I have tried this new combination, but still the same
The phone turns on, I see the screen attached above, then briefly Oneplus logo and back to fastboot menu.

Hello Piero, thanks for your msg.
I have reflashed about 100 times now
When the phone is in the state with the screen attached above, reflash is not possible, fastboot can’t find it.

I would try an earlier recovery, just a few versions, say 2.0.

There are other options, don’t worry that you might have messed up the device just yet.

Hello Chris,
Thank you for your suggestion, it was spot on.

I had to use even older recovery image

recovery-e-1.21-r-20240323388943-dev-oneplus3.img

Another user had the same problem.

The rest was as is described in the howto.

Many thanks, now I am setting everything up. I am so happy, I almost gave up on this because of lack of time to tinker around.

Ah, that’s great! Glad you got it going. Enjoy your “new” phone. :grinning:
