Questions about /e/OS

Hello everyone,

I recently discovered that my Pixel 5 was no longer supported by Google.
But it’s still working fine! As a result, I wanted to switch to /e/OS but what is /e/'s policy towards phones that are no longer supported? /e/ will continue to update as long as LineageOS does or will it stop as soon as the phone is at the “end of its life”?

And do I need to unlock the bootloader to install /e/?
Is it possible to re-lock it after installation?

Thank you :wink:

Hello there, and a warm welcome !

Sorry for the end of support from the Gogol, but if this lead to e/OS, finally it’s a good thing !

I don’t know if there is such a policy, but you’re lucky with your phone :

this model is sold by Murena, with e/OS already installed : This mean that they will offer long term support for this device.

You can check it in the smartphone selector and there you will find tutorial and answers to your question !

What is the current version of Android on the phone?
You need to unlock the bootloader to install eOS, but I believe the Pix 5 is one of the phone that can be re-locked. You can also use the easy installer but make sure the version numbers of android are equal.

Yes it can be re-locked: Install /e/OS on a Google Pixel 5 - “redfin”

I have version 14 installed.

removed posted to incorrect threrad.

Sorry for the strange question, but are you aware of what e/OS is and what it means compared to your current OS?

@Jets

I might have a utility (MyPhoneExplorer) that would allow me to back up everything without asking for an account. In any case, I was out of the question of using software that would require you to cut back on your privacy.

@mihi

Yes, I know that /e/ is based on LineageOS, free of all the spying carried out by Google.

Anyway, it doesn’t tell me whether /e/ will continue to offer a version of its software if the phone reaches the end of its life.

In other words: will my Pixel 5 ever get Android 15 (assuming LineageOS offers a version, of course)?

Allright.

Regarding the A15 update. I would say Murena can’t tell you which device will be supported, that decision will be made next year.

Usually if LOS drops it, then Murena will also. The smartphones sold in stores are the exception. If think Galaxy S7 is one of them and S8 :thinking::thinking:.

Maybe look at the temporary list of devices which will be update to A14, then you can have a slight guess which Pixel gets how long software.

One has to decide for one self whether the lack of patches from the manufacturer side can still be considered secure enough for ones individual use case.

In general a lot of devices are supported that are long considered EOL by the manufacturer, like my S7 for instance. The best support can be expected for phones that are/were sold by murena. See this thread: [LIST] Devices to get a /e/OS U or Android 14 build

But there’s never gurantees because technical reasons or lack of resources or else might cause end of support for specific models.

With the link, I noticed that the Pixel 2 was likely to get Android 14, and its end of support for security updates expired 4 years ago.

So that makes me confident in my choice of /e/.
Now I just need to find the time to make the switch … :frowning:

you will need to downgrade to Android 13 based Gogol Stock Firmware,
Or to wait for the /e/OS-U version release announced for mid December…
