Requesting suggestions for voLTE phone

It is with great sadness that I must deprecate my trusty Galaxy S5. It has served me well for many years and I am going to miss it. It has just the right size and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Anyway, I must buy a new (preferably used) phone and am in need of suggestions. What phone supports voLTE, has a 3.5 mm headphone jack and is sized similarly to the S5?

All suggestions are appreciated.

Sony, Pixel, Motorola? newer phones past 2018 usually do not pose a problem unless you’re in the US or Australia. There are lists for VoLTE compatibility in this forum, but they represent a known subset - the compat is higher. I’d recommend the moto-g7-play for a small phone that will be able to run Android 14.

On another note: I just use VoIP and messengers call function on another older phone. Calls can have slightly more latency, but it’s not much of a hassle.

@tcecyk Thank you for all your suggestions!

Alas, the Moto G7 Play seems notably absent in my location at the moment but I will keep my eyes open, it is good to have a spare just in case :slightly_smiling_face: and I can always switch later if I want to.

I have however found a Pixel 4a 5G ready for purchase. It has model number G025l, not G025E which is the model number listed on the Smartphone Selector page. I do realize that going with this phone is risky, the documentation clearly states that other models are not supported.

Still I can’t help but wonder if it might work with /e/ OS. Do you have any experience with putting /e/ OS on unlisted phones? Is it a bad idea to try, given possible hardware differences and such? What is the probability of it working?

Indeed, but the “Supported model” is the one that was tested (and worked on to liberate the phone).

One can often get a clue by just running a comparison on the web and see what comes up.

So “Pixel 4a G025I vs Pixel 4a G025E” turns up Google Pixel 4a 5G (G025I) vs Google Pixel 4a 5G (G025E) | PhoneMore

Then “Highlight differences” suggests

Pixel 4a G025I is the Global, International variant, while Pixel 4a G025E is Canada, USA.

The first thing to beware of in USA is a locked bootloader, in quick checking I found this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/j2wbyj/which_version_of_the_pixel_4a_5g_will_be_released/.

I am not coming to any conclusions, sorry, but if you are in USA you might add it to the thread title.

Instead of looking for a phone with 3.5 jack you could use an USB_C to 3,5" jack adapter, works on almost al devices with USB_C

@rockford
And then I would think the Sony Xperia XZ2 compact would be a nice replacement for the S5.

It supports VoLTE, although you should check with your provider.
Almost same size as the S5, a little more chubby, it has specs comparable with the S9 and it is on the list for e/os/ -U upgrade
And can use 3.5" jack with an USB_C to 3.5" jack adapter

@aibd
Yeah. I looked at it a bit more and realised that I am not the right person to venture into the great unknown… :slight_smile: Thanks for the pointers though!

@WillemR
That’s a great idea! I’ll add it to my list of phones to look out for. I mean, it ticks most boxes and is even shorter than the S5 which is a plus in my book. :slight_smile:

@rockford
Yes I think it’s the best choice for what you are (and me was) looking for.
If you want e/os/, need VoLTE, and really like a small pocket size.

Disadvantage, I can’t find a working GCam app for this phone, only a very old one, V 5.1, that does not work well with the newer e\os.
So picture’s in low light, not so good.

If you are someone who is able to change battery themself, I mean with heating equipment end the right tools, this one is not easy.

It’s a little chubby, 12 mm thickness , S5 S7 around 8 mm.
No Oled display but it’s still looks. good.

And I don’t know which part of the world you live, maybe not available or hard to find.

Another option, if you are willing to use Unofficial e\os\ rom, The Unihertz Atom XL, a very rugged, small, 4,5" screen, device.

Thank you for including me in responses. Having learned a lot about now obsolete topics, in the 80’s and90’s, i find i am now learning a lot more of todays necessities by getting responses and eavesdropping others. Thank you, from a quite older person , learning from the young, just at the right time in life!:wink:

@rockford
Correction, the Unihertz Atom XL or L are not suited for you.
I tested one, and VoLTE is not working, or maybe not yet.

This Unofficial /e/OS is built on Unofficial beta/beta LineageOS, still a lot in development so maybe in the future.
