The suggestion " Volume Down + Bixby + Power" didn’t work for me. What work was:

 adb reboot recovery

then through the menu appearing, select: “reboot to bootloader” or something like that. It gave a configuration that allowed to continue with:

heimdall flash --RECOVERY twrp-x.x.x-x-crownlte.img --no-reboot

and to move on with the rest of the installation.
It’s an interesting turnaround when stuck like described.

When introducing the Note 9, Samsung changed the way to boot into Download mode. Holding Volume Down and Bixby and then connecting the USB adapter to the Note 9 is sufficient - holding “Power” spoils it.
Then the disclaimer has to be accepted.
The message “Downloading, do not turn off target” is fake an can be ignored. The terminal on the computer displays a finished download correct (E.g. Heimdall needed only a few seconds).
When leaving the Download mode to change into Recovery mode, the programmed reboot has to be interrupted. There is really a very small interval, estimated less than two seconds, to hold Volume up, Bixby and Power to reboot into recovery.
