Smaller reburbished devices

Hi,

as far as I remember there have been different refurbished devices (e.g. Samsung devices) in the shop some time ago. Where have they gone? Is there a chance to have them back?
Reason of my question: I need to buy first devices for my children and I don’t want to spend a lot of money for a device that has a high risk of getting damaged. A cheap refurbished device would be perfect here.

I don’t think so, they are some sort of EOL. I would recommend a Samsung S5 neo. Not perfect but you should get it cheap for some testing.

I’d recommend a Moto G7 Play, but /e/ doesn’t have it on its build roster atm, though Lineage and Lineage4microg has.

As /e/ puts lots of apps into the system partition, maybe that’s the reason it got dropped. L4M + Aurora isn’t far off from the /e/ experience if you didn’t count on parental controls much. But there too exist alternatives.

The old devices are surely EOL. I thought of this topic more generally, i.e. having “a” refurbished device from Samsung or whatever. There are cheap refurbished devices for first-time users from other provides so it seems to be kinda profitable.

Parental control is actually THE feature I’m looking for. Didn’t look too much into it up to now but the /e features seem to be quite cool as far as I can see it.

the Pixel 4a is pretty compact and has support - or any older Pixel too if you think the smaller screen real estate poses no issue. Esp. Pixel 2 can be had pretty cheap now.

The older you go though you might look at battery replacement and Pixels are usually in the “moderate” difficulty at ifixit (starting with a heater pad on the screen to unglue) with some difference between their models. For some the battery is there after display removal, others have yet another midframe.

phonesized.com is great to compare the form factor.

That’s a good hint, thank you!
Anyway, my initial question is regarding official devices with pre-installed OS. TBH I prefer getting a device that is ready to use and guaranteed to work. I don’t really like the feeling of being one second away from bricking a device.

Murena sells the Pixel 5 refurbished in the US (Pixel 7 in EU/US both, but it’s larger).
You’d need to ping their store support or Manoj if any other compact refurbished device is on the roadmap for your market region.

(if you edit the typo in your post title, future searches for “refurbished” get a hit)

here was another thread for “compact” phone - though store sold wasn’t a requirement - Small smartphone / Big battery (with /e/os)
