Release Updates

Current Release v4.1.1 :new_button:

What is a staggered release

Please note that all /e/OS releases are staggered releases.

Which means, during the release days, every day a small set of devices are released.

The reason we do our releases in this manner, is we support 250+ devices.
If we release all builds at the same time the servers will crash as we will have thousands if not millions of simultaneous hits on the servers.

Official builds usually get released during the last days of the release process.
The release process usually takes about 7 to 10 days.

Upcoming Milestones

Murena Account Recovery Email

Ensure your Murena Workspace account (e.email or murena.io ) has a recovery email set.

  • New Accounts without a recovery email will face reduced functionality for 30 days and post that will be marked for deletion.
  • The process will be the same for existing accounts without a recovery email

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Now anyone with a /e/OS Gitlab account can edit the Documentation site. Share your /e/OS gitlab ID with me @Manoj and I can get you the required access to edit the documentation. Your changes will be created as a Merge Request and after it has been reviewed and approved it will get published. :new_button:

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Devices with official builds will not have community builds showing up in the installation guides.

  • The community versions of the devices we sell or sold has been removed from the documentation.

  • We would prefer users to eventually shift to the official builds. That way the maintenance of the devices is easier and more efficient.

  • For now the community builds are being built and can be access by adding community to the device image download link replacing official. For example: /e/OS community starlte download

📋 To Be Planned

This is the consolidated list of all devices which have an official build. The plan is to upgrade all to the latest build possible. This may not work for all devices as some are too old have already hit EOL from vendor and may not work on latest OS versions. Devices with ‘No Update’ come in this category.

(Devices marked with an ‘*’ have an issue with FDE encryption which requires format before the OS can be upgraded. This essential means there would be data loss. If we are able to build a A15 build for these devices, the user will have to manual install it and that would require first taking a backup of all data.)

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Check the section titled A16 Updates below

📖 What is OS OTA Upgrade?

Traditional Process:

:inbox_tray: Download correct OS build from supported device list

:inbox_tray: Download stock ROM from vendor site (for some devices)

:floppy_disk: Back up your data

:counterclockwise_arrows_button: Install stock ROM, then /e/OS ROM

:counterclockwise_arrows_button: Restore backups if needed

OTA Benefits:

:white_check_mark: Simplifies the entire process

:warning: Requires significant development and testing

:speaker_high_volume: A16 Updates :speaker_high_volume: :new_button:

  • We plan to update all devices currently on A12, A13, A14 and A15 to A16 :speaker_high_volume:

  • In case any device is not able of handling the A16 builds we will share that information.

  • The team expects that A16 would not be buildable or installable on some of the older gen devices like the Samsung S7 or S8. There could be more.

    • For such devices we we will work on getting them to the highest OS version possible.
  • As you may be aware A12 does not receive security patches anymore. This will next impact A13 and so on. This is a standard Google policy to end of life (EOL) older Android versions.

  • All devices we sell in our shop, with official builds are priority candidates for OTA OS upgrade to A16.

    • Official builds get OTA OS upgrades.
    • Community devices require manual upgrade.

(Ideally in all cases, take backups while upgrading the OS of your device)

4.1.1 will be a game changer for FP6: no more unexpected random reboots. It levels up the quality of the overall product to high standards!

IMO with the stock fairphone camera app and all recents features and improvements of /e/os, it’s getting close to a high end smartphone.

I miss nothing from my iPhone anymore!

Stil no new update for my fp6,

hi @Manoj thanks for the update!
could you please ask the dev team where they are at regarding the avicii A14->A16 update?

The A14->A16 transition has been listed as WIP since may and since the A12->A16 was already completed by that time, I’m just wondering whether there is a specific problem that explains what’s blocking the update.
I’d rather avoid sideloading a 2-major-versions update but since I’ve a device that’s been stuck on 3.1 for almost a year now, I am kind of wondering whether I should really keep waiting or not.

The update hasn’t reached my FP6 yet. I hope it pops up in the next few hours.
Restarting hasn’t helped so far.

Hello @Manoj , are there any news because of the 502 errors that are sometimes returned by push.murena.com? Unfortunately, I have still experienced the problem. If necessary, I can open a bug ticket.
EDIT: Or is there another place where I can forward the problem?
EDIT 2: I have used the Murena contact form (I am a paying customer, so why not use it sometimes? ) No offence to Manoj, I just think that he is busy and that the Murena Operations team has not answered him yet.

When will the annoying low volume bug (other issue) on the FP4 be fixed ? This bug exists since 3.3.

The issues were marked as closed, but the problem still exists.

You can find the news here, if there’s a new version:

community

Do you mean

https://ota.ecloud.global/api/v1/FP6/community/

https://ota.ecloud.global/api/v1/FP6/official/

?

@solanum & @piero

I’d rather not have to manually download and install an update on an “official” device. Given that it’s labeled “OFFICIAL,” this really should be done via OTA (Over-the-Air).

Besides, I’m not the only one dealing with this issue right now.

How do I create a merge request? After clicking on Edit in GitLab, the creation of a fork is proposed but I get an error message:

Passing on the details to the team to check. Will update once I get a response from them.

FP6 A16 rollout may be delayed as we await some testing results. Will update on the rollout once we get the results.

I was able to reproduce that error.

However (untested) I had the sense that an edit was intended possible without creating the fork?

Edit. Just as per previous experience, create a Fork of user by the regular method to my namespce also fails with

Limit reached You cannot create projects in your personal namespace. Contact your GitLab administrator.

As I understand this is expected as I am not an “organisation” member.

Same here.
Manually checking for updates doesn’t help either.

I caused some confusion. I only meant this as a source to get the information, if there’s any new version released. Then i update my Fairphone OTA.

ps, there should be one for official as well:

Yes, but the update isn’t showing up for me—or rather, the updater says there’s no new update. I can see the update via the link, but it’s not being offered to me in the updater.

This must be some form of group hysteria that we are seeing repeat comments from users who have not read the thread since their previous contribution.

There’s no update to 4.1.1 for FP6 yet. Not on my links, nor on any phone.

So the only thing i can recommend is to just wait and relax until news arrive.

Really :joy::joy::joy: (a few more characters to be able to post)
