Wrong APN when using the (Dutch) Vodafone network

Dear support,

be aware English is not my native language. I tried my best to explain the situation with as much information as possible.

It seems that when using /e/OS in combination with the (Dutch) telecom provider Vodafone (or other mobile telecom provider which is on the Dutch Vodafone network) the default APN is from an foreign telecom company. To be specific: The Israëli telecom company Sphone Pelephone.

When using (Dutch) Vodafone the default APN is: sphone.pelephone.net.il

There is another APN in the list with APN’s from this company called: Multimedia Pelephone.
This APN is: mms.pelephone.net.il

These are not the only odd APN’s which shows up in the list when using the Dutch Vodafone telecom provider.

There are also two Chinese APN’s:
中国电信NET设置 - ctnet
中国电信WAP设置 - ctwap

As we are in The Netherlands using the Dutch telecom provider Vodafone, or atleast the Dutch part of Vodafone, it is unacceptable to be connected to a foreign APN by default without being aware of this.
There seems to be no relation to both companies
so this seems to be a huge error.

Connecting to an APN from a telecom company from a foreign country is a big red flag!

These are the APN’s on /e/OS when using (Dutch) Vodafone.
Sphone Pelephone is the one selected by default.

APN NAME APN address
Sphone Pelephone sphone.pelephone.net.il
Ziggo Mobiel ziggo.dataxs.mobi
hollandsnieuwe (type 1) data.dataxs.mobi
hollandsnieuwe (type 2) live.vodafone.com
中国电信NET设置 ctnet
中国电信WAP设置 ctwap
IMS ims
Multimedia Pelephone mms.pelephone.net.il
Vodafone MMS Business office.vodafone.nl

On the Dutch forum from the website Tweakers we are lucky to have heavy user/expert around. He pointed out for us what possibly could be wrong (while he is not even using /e/OS himself).
All credits for the information below goes to him!

He pointed out that this fault seems to be inherited from LineageOS and the list with APN’s LineageOS is using.
It seems that there is a problem with the MCC and MNC names being used for different APN providers.
Therefore when using (Dutch) Vodafone the APN’s which are loaded by default are wrong. The result is that the phone is connecting to an APN from a foreign (Israëli) telecom company by default and that there are two APN’s shown from a Chinees telecom provider.

All these are having no relation with the Dutch telecom provider Vodafone and should not be visible to us an definitely shouldn’t be a default APN.

Vodafone, Ziggo, HollandsNieuwe are using the Vodafone network.

I hope this is the right place to point this out so the devs can get into this.

As I mentioned before it is unacceptable to be connected to an APN from a foreign country.
Especially for an OS that is focusing on privacy.

All (or at least a specific number of) Dutch /e/OS users who are using Vodafone or a (Dutch) company which is using the Vodafone network are connected to this Israeli APN by default.

Please let me know if this is the right place to post this so it will get the attention from the devs.

Thanks in advance!

At first sight, similar to [Bug] Fairphone 6 /e/OS 3.7.1: Foreign APN profiles (CN) appear as greyed out + carrier name not updating during roaming (??)

Not really, this is a user forum. Gitlab Work items as above is where development work is logged and actioned.

Seems to have been fixed in the /e/OS APN database a few days ago: NL: remove misplaced Pelephone and China Telecom APNs (MCC 204 MNC 04) (7892d0de) · Commits · e / os / android_vendor_apn · GitLab

Thank you for the replies.

Happy to hear it already seems to be fixed. Looking forward to the next update.

Probably the same problem here, with the 50+ network through Vodafone. Connection interrupted each day, having to restart the phone twice to get 5G again. Connections to Israel on a supposedly safe and commercial-free internet…

I hope to have solved the problem through their troubleshooting page: Alles werkt, behalve mijn internet? : New APN info made, as far as possible in e/Os.
