Android shows active internet connection, but no apps have internet access

Title:

Android shows active internet connection, but no app have internet access

Summary:

I’ve recently updated my Fairphone 4 to /e/OS 3.0.1. Since the update, It reports an active internet connection (on both Wi-Fi and mobile data), but no apps are able to access the internet. This includes browsers (Firefox), email apps (K-9 Mail), messaging apps (Signal, Olvid), banking apps, and others.

However:

  • Internet works via mobile hotspot — connected devices have full internet access.
  • ADB shell has working network access (ping and curl works).
  • In Termux, network access fails — for example, ping returns: socket: Permission denied.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Connect phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data
  2. Open any app that uses the internet (browser, email, messaging, banking, etc.)
  3. Observe that all apps report a lack of connection (fail to load content or send/receive data)
  4. Open Termux and run ping 8.8.8.8 → Fails with: ping: socket: Permission denied
  5. Run same command in ADB shell → Ping works
  6. Enable mobile hotspot and connect a second device → Connected device has working internet access

Expected Behavior:

User apps and terminals like Termux should be able to access the internet when the system reports an active connection.

Actual Behavior:

All user-installed apps fail to access the internet. Termux cannot open network sockets.
System-level access (ADB shell) and internet tethering work as expected.

Device & System Info:

  • Device: Fairphone 4

  • OS: /e/OS 3.0.1-a14-20250607498722-official-FP4 (Android 14)

  • All apps affected:

    • Firefox
    • K-9 Mail
    • Signal
    • Olvid
    • Banking app(s)
    • Nextcloud
    • Termux
  • VPN / Firewall: None used

  • Network type: Both Wi-Fi and mobile data tested

  • Tethering: Works correctly — connected device has internet

Diagnostics & Notes:

  • Termux shows: ping: socket: Permission denied
  • Apps display “no connection” or fail to sync/load data
  • ADB shell can ping and run curl successfully
  • No changes made to firewall/VPN/DNS settings
  • System appears to block user apps from network stack access

needs an affected FP4 owner to chip in, but the backlog doesn’t have something recent:

you could search in-thread at both feedback threads for v3.x for other reports on the FP4

I think in your very full analysis you do not include the effects of Advanced Privacy … in testing I would turn off all AP.

Hi,

Just a question : do you have this icon (at the middle) when your app might use internet connection? The barred circle

Hi there,

Since I have made the update on July the 7th, I have the same problem.
On FairPhone 4, MAJ 3.0.1-a14-20250607498722-official-FP4

I’m also unable to search for new update.

Do you have a fix ?

Hi all,

Exact same problem for me.

FP4, updated from e/OS 2.something to 3.0.1-a14-20250607…official-FP4 on 12 July.
Since then, there is connection, but apps do not have actual internet access. Also: using the phone as a hotspot works just fine for those who use my hotspot.

I do get the globe-with-diagonal-dash through it in as MIB posted a few days back. Somewhere in the settings the icon seems to refer to Firewall, although I do not seem to find settings for that anywhere.

I managed to upate to 3.0.2-a14-20250627504416-official-FP4 via USB and local update, but the problem persists.

Thanks to all the people that have provided so much information, insights and suggestions in the general Feedback for v3.0 channel already! More thoughts are welcome!

Also, do we have an idea how long it may take to tackle the issue through a next updated e/OS version?

Hello,
I have a similar issue: with mobile data on, i have no internet connection in the apps. Icon 5G shows a !
But I have internet connection in the browser !?!
An application should have disrupt everything?
I’d like to have your comment and eventual fixing on this issue

Hello,
I’m sorry, I’ve been away for a long weekend, without a computer and because of the internet problem on the phone, I didn’t see the answer.
I have this icon. Intermittently, I think when the app has internet in the manifest.
Additionally, I have disabled the advanced privacy option. At least as far as I know; I’ve disabled Trackers Blocker, Hide My IP, and Fake My Location

I found a solution ! I think that message from @MIB made my ears ring.
By a mysterious action, the internet access to all the app was drop during update.
To solve it, you must go into “setting” → “apps” choose an app to witch you want add the internet connection “app info” → “mobile data usage” → and enable “allow network access”

Very weird that this setting was automatically changed, but it is great that it could be fixed! :+1:

Never happened to me that any update reconfigured the network access settings.

Good news! Problem solved for me too! Very happy!
Thank you all for your help!

Hi,
Good for you coco that your problem is solved!
Your solution is not good for me. Here is what I got on the screen (see below).
As I told, everyrhing works fine with wifi.
With mobile data, apps are acting strange: some (thunderbird mail for example) are working, other not. Only browser works fine.
Any hints?
Thanks a lot

Hi Coco,
I tried on my FP4 and… it worked !!!

Thank you very much all @MIB @aibd @Fox

I appreciate your help and kindness. Humanity is not lost yet !

Thanks for the solution. It works for all my applications. But, as the “mise à jour du système” is not an app, I cannot use the solution of @coco for it. System update are locked for me. Is there a way to update my system ?

So the affected app is System updater or Updater or try

Guestionnaire de mise à jour.

Bonjour Pierre,

Je me suis posé la même question.

Voici la solution :
Paramètres → Applications → Voir toutes les applis → Afficher le système (3 petits points en haut à droite) → cherche Gestionnaire de mise à jour, puis autorise l’accès au réseau pour cette application.

Cordialement,

Merci beaucoup @FP4EOS et @aibd , ça marche!

Hi,
I have the same issue as PierreB above: the 5G icon with ! and no network.
Only calls and SMS are working.
I tried Coco’s solution with “allow network access”, but it doesn’t fix anything; still the “!” and still no network.
I have a Nothing CMF phone 1 and did the update yersterday to 3.0.4-a14-20250708207308-official-tetris.
It was working well before ; I only experienced the same issue once, trying to use a micro-SD card. I finally removed the card and after it came back to normal … until yesterday night with the update.
Does anyone know what I should do?
Thanks

Hello,

It’s not exactly the same as you, I’ve a brandnew fairfphone 6 since 25/07/25 (so I don’t know all the tips and tricks  )and the netwerk was working… I thought. When I go out the mobile data doens’t really work even with the 5G icon and a good signal. I’ve verified the configuration of the APN (in french : Noms des points d’accès) of my mobile provider (in Beligum Orange for me) and click on the selected APN. In the configuration was a proxy/port/username/pw configured but that was not necessary. so I remove these 4 fields and now my 5G works perfectly. I see elsewhere in the forum people having problem with itinerance, maybe if the default configuration of APN is bad with some operators by default on e/os 3.0.4 it can cause mobile internet problems abroad. To verify… I’m not next a border so I can’t test.

Hope this will help you.

Hi Digo,
Indeed, it was the problem.
I also dig in the forums and on the web and found that my APN were somehow reset.
I set the APN for my network/provider and now it works fine.
Thanks
