Camera without function Xiaomi Mi 9T

Hello,
I have now installed the /e/os on my Mi9T several times, but unfortunately no camera app works. Neither the preinstalled nor one from the store.
When I start any camera app, I don’t see any image or buttons. All I see is a black screen and at the bottom there are three buttons (triangle (back), circle (home) and square (all apps)).
Do I need to set anything to allow the apps access to the camera?
The OS is freshly installed, no settings have been made yet.
hp Restart didn’t help either

I would be very happy if you could help me.
Thanks in advance.

Hallo,
PS. Neustart hat auch nicht geholfen

Würde mich sehr freuen, wenn Ihr mir weiterhelfen könnt.
Danke im Voraus.

How long is it since /e/OS was installed ? Am I right in guessing that you observed this behaviour immediately on first install ?

If yes – my guess would be to look at the Android version installed on the phone before you installed /e/OS. Did it meet the following ?

Caution: Do not install /e/OS on top of a higher version of stock OS. Before installing /e/OS ensure your device has the latest stock OS of the same version as /e/OS. If only lower versions of the stock are available then install the last available lower version before installing /e/OS.

However

The following bug exists

https://gitlab.e.foundation/e/backlog/-/issues/3989

Hello and thanks for the quick reply.
If I understand that correctly, then the Mi 9T is not fully compatible?
Have it reinstalled in the meantime and again a problem that after flashing the recovery image there is a reboot loop. (recovery-e-1.6-q-20221204240086-dev-davinci.img)
So I can’t even test different suggestions anymore :triumph:.

#######DEUTSCH#######

How long is it since /e/OS was installed ?

Very fresh

Am I right in guessing that you observed this behaviour immediately on first install ?

Yes.

If yes – my guess would be to look at the Android version installed on the phone before you installed /e/OS. Did it meet the following ?

I don’t know if I understand correctly, I should compare the android version between original and /e/os?

Just installed the original OS and it is Android 11.
Is something changing now???

#######DEUTSCH#########

Habe soeben das original OS installiert und es ist Android 11.
Ändert sich nun etwas???

Ahhh … so that explains the bootloop … Android 11 = R and e-1.6-q-20221204240086-dev-davinci.zip is Android 10 = Q – be aware: e-1.6-q-20221204240086-dev-davinci.zip.

Are you able to downgrade to Android 10 in the Xiaomi ROM, or wait for R ? However it is mentioned in the replies of the bug report that /e/ has no ROM maintainer !

Perfect, the answer helps me a lot.
Then I’ll see if a downgrade is possible, alternatively I’ll have to wait.
Many Thanks

########DEUTSCH#########

Perfekt, die Antwort hilft mir sehr weiter.
Dann schaue ich mal, ob ein Downgrade möglich ist, alternativ werde ich warten müssen.
Vielen Dank

If a downgrade is possible, be sure to look for the latest Q build offered to do you best to meet:

Before installing /e/OS ensure your device has the latest stock OS of the same version as /e/OS.

The chance that an R version will come soon is further reduced as LineageOS is on Q https://lineageosroms.com/davinci/

I’ve found identical same malfunctions as @InesM1912

Xiaomi Mi 9T (davinci)
/e/ Recovery V1.7 and cameras faulty

/e/ Recovery V1.7 and cameras faulty

I got the Mi 9T (davinci) with /e/OS ‘Q’ e-1.3-q-20220825213388-dev-davinci for repair because the motorized pop-up front camera was not working

Error messages: Main cam: unable to access camera + camera cannot be toggled (selfie camera).

Next, I installed the latest available stock Android 10 (Global). Both cameras work!

Now I tried several times in vain to boot into e-Rocovery V1.7. With the installation of TWRP Recovery V3.6.2_9-0 I was able to boot into TWRP on the first try and install the /e/OS ‘Q’ V1.7.

The test with the Simple Camera Abb from SimpleMobileTools was also negative. But again both cameras do not work. Both times the same error message as above

Now installed for test crDroidAndroid-11.0-20220402-davinci-v7.16. Both cameras work.

The source of the error is clearly from the /e/ software.

Xiaomi Mi 9T (davinci) e-1.8.1-q-20230206257879-dev-davinci

  1. /e/ Recovery V1.8.1 ‘Q’ does not boot
  2. Both cameras are without function

The identical errors occur as with build e-1.7-q-20230112251029-dev

  1. I fail to boot /e/ Recovery - but with twrp-3.4.0-10-davinci-mauronofrio it works flawlessly right away.

  2. /e/ Camera app: Black displays, as if dead.

  1. Secure camera by GraoheneOS with black displays, but with failure messages:

a) The front camera could not be detected. Please try again later!
b) Cannot open due to OS …

For the counter test was installed custom ROM PixelExperience Plus davinci-13.0-20230108-1712-OFFICIAL (Android 13)

  1. PixelExperience Recovery boots properly after the initial installation.

  2. PixelExperience camera apps works fine.
The motorized pop-up front camera extends and retracts on command. Switching to the main camera is possible at any time.

PixelExperience is a strong ROM, but unfortunately completely Google infected.

Hi, I am dealing with same problem on my Mi9T phone.

What I recognized, there’s a problem probably with communication between camera app and hardware - I suppose, that problem is either with motorised front camera, or with the wide lenses.

The problem for me disappeared in few latest versions (up to 1.6), but in the new version (I am using 1.81), which I installed few days ago, is unfortunately back.

In addition, this problem also affects the use of Signal app, where I cannot open any message (probably some background communication is connected to camera). Here is my older case, where I tried to solve this.

I will look into log file, if there is some useful informations - hope that some programmer could help

What gives unofficial LineageOS 17 (Android Q)? https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/official-rom-10-0-0-davinci-lineageos-17-1.4027465/page-69

Thanks for a tip @smu44!

The informations in that forum are little confusing and problem with camera is probably solved in newer versions of Lineage OS (f.e. in latest Lineage OS is the camera module changed to some CameraX, if I caught it right).

Anyway, I’ve read a LOT of another forums and many users solved this with various techniques (restart camserver daemon, clean install, Magisk modules >> SElinux permissive mode, module to better camera integration) etc.

I tried many of them, but unfortunately nothing works for me.

The result (after all the research, for me) is, that the problem must be fixed by developers in the OS (either Lineage or e/OS/). I am attaching my logcat with errors, where I believe the errors are probably clearly displayed (I am not a programmer) and hope, that some developer could fix it

Fun fact is, that the problem with camera is not so important for me (I can wait to fix) as the problem, that I cannot use Signal app, which crash too, when I start to open any conversation

As LineageOS doesn’t officially support this device anymore, you may open a GitLab issue to have /e/ devs take a look.

Xiaomi Mi 9T (davinci) e-1.10-q-20230416280390-dev-davinci

Vendor Name: Xiaomi
Device name: Mi 9T
Device CodeName: davinci
Version of /e/OS or Stock which existed previously: V12.0.9.0.QFJMIXM_10 Global = Stock Android 10
Is the device Not rooted

  1. /e/ Recovery V1.10 ‘Q’ does not boot
  2. Both cameras are without function

The identical errors occur as with builds …

e-1.7-q-20230112251029-dev
e-1.8.1-q-20230206257879-dev
e-1.9-q-20230312268823-dev

  1. I fail to boot /e/ Recovery - but with twrp-3.4.0-10-davinci-mauronofrio it works flawlessly right away.
  2. /e/ Camera app: Black displays, as if dead.

V12.1.4.0.RFJMIXM_11.0 Global = Stock Android 11
With three other more or less known CustomROMs based on LineageOS 20 (Android 13) including Signature spoofing or MicroG support along with TWRP 3.6.2 recovery, everything works - even MIUI Camera (Leica).
