eSIM randomly stops working

Fairphone

Not rooted

Since version 3.3 I’ve massive issues with my e-SIM. It randomly stops working, but it is not visible that there is an issue. I just realize it, when I try to call someone and there is nothing else on the phone app than the name of the person/number I try to call. Normally there are five buttons like to mute, add numbers, change sim card and so on. The call cannot be done in that case.

Furthermore, for people trying to call me there is a free sign, so they think my phone is ringing. I do not get any notification, not even that a call was missed by SMS.

The only way to solve this is to restart the phone, when I realize that the issue happens again…

By the way, when the issue accures, the eSIM cannot be deactivated nor the flight mode is working. Of course, it is possible to activate the flight mode, but the physical SIM and the eSIM card are still showing their connection is activated.

I am using this phone for more than two years and till version 3.3 there had been no issues with the eSIM that I have noticed…

I need a solution how to fix that.

Provider did not turn of 3G and you have settings which don’t use VoLTE?

Hi, I have a German provider and 3G is not used here anymore as far as I know.

Hi there,

it is sad, that there is no comment by eOS. I’ve read about similar problems with eSIM from.other users. Is it somehow possible to checkout if this issue is about eOS or the smartphone model?

Well, there is not much /e/OS staff around here, it is a forum where the community can help each other.

If you did not create a gitlab issue then you should do that. There developers might comment or ask further questions.

If you bought the device from Murena then you can try to create a ticket on the helpdesk.

We do know that the APN system within AOSP changed at the very end of 2025 so it is possible that your APN settings on device changed with your quoted build. If you check threads with hashtag apn most threads will refer to the old system except those in 2026.

Perhaps check your APN against those published by your carrier. Perhaps talk to your carrier, did anything change at their end? Even if they are reluctant, ask for an APN reset. Speculation, carriers may rely on some Google magic that gets excluded by /e/OS. If you :magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Search the forum for your carrier do others have problems?

Thank you for that hint. I will try to get more information about that.

I use eSIM a lot to travel and had lots of issues.

If you have confirmed your APN settings and that didn’t do it, try to reset your mobile settings in System/Reset Options/Mobile Network Settings & restart/reconnect to network…
