FP6 Called complain about bad call quality

Fairphone 6, German D2 net via Freenet (no 5G usage).

I got full bars and can hear everybody perfectly clear but those I have called complain it sounds like I had very bad connection.

Any ideas?

what version are you on? this was a recent fp6 call audio thread (and in there another audio thread linked) that said things seemed to have improved with v3.2

3.2 A15-20251022 and too many numbers.

I could rule out that it was related to my bumper (that’s another story tho)

Problem seems to be especially big with landline connections

In case other /e/ users might be able to help (official or community) [HOWTO] Give complete /e/OS version info easily for support, answers, comparison etc copy is available rather than recall from memory.

Nobody got an idea? Today I had a chance to hear it myself. Sounds like very bad reception.

Then I switched to external speaker and the problem was gone.

Should I switch my preferred network to “Global”? Right now it’s NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA.

Germany by the way

I previously linked into the FP6 repo audio/ where you could see if somebody noticed your issue.

If nothing is happening it commits are months in the past, there’s no other fix coming.

File this as bug and link the threads in the forum.

Imo it’s obviously about the audio plumbing itself if the audio instantly improves if it audio takes another path

I’ve been having the exact same issue myself since I bought my FP6 with /e/os in September, I’m also running version 3.2-a15-20251022539003-official-FP6 but the problem was there before. From what I can see here it seems like they might be releasing a bugfix in the upcoming version 3.3, although the thread is mainly about bad quality of the audio while recording videos they also mention phone calls and I think the issues are related. I’m waiting for the new release to check if it’s solved.

Is there a timeframe when 3.3 will be released? It’s weird to start every call with “do you understand me?”

Okay, I’m narrowing it down right now. It’s definetly not just handset-related and gone when switching to external speaker. On both “roads” it’s more like

  1. Seconds of crystal clear connections for both parties
  2. Then my sound “crashes”. It sounds like someone would switch my mic on and off very fast. So everything I say is getting axed.
  3. What I hear stays completely fine. So the problem is just my voice.

It’s like “Hello, yes you’re speaking with Bubba Actual” turns into “He…s…ou…ki…ith…ba…A…l”

Is that the exact same problem you’re dealing with, @buildingleaver ? It’s very annoying to me to a point where I had to use different phones to make important calls. This needs to be fixed asap.

I can’t say for sure because so far I still haven’t heard that effect myself, but what many people have reported might be slightly different than what you describe: they say that, while there is no other sound in the background, they can hear me very well; when there is someone else speaking around me - even only a couple of meters far - or there is some background noise going on, they hear the rest of sounds distorted and louder than my voice, and sometimes they don’t even hear me. As well as you, I also can hear the other party very well during calls.

In the following days I’m going to try to hear the effect myself by handing my phone over to someone else and calling them while we are in a noisy environment. Anyway from the Gitlab page of /e/OS it seems like version 3.3 is already out, so it should be a matter of days until we’re able to see if it goes any better after the upgrade.

Thanks for the info. If 3.3 won’t do the trick then I’ll try it with a different (FOSS) phone app. I ain’t no expert so trial and error it is^^

Very frustrated. Neither the update to 3.3 nor the use of the Fossify Phone app instead of the /e/OS one did change anything.

It can’t be hardware-related since it’s a sporadic problem. So what do I do now?

Ideally you would check as Post #7 whether a bug like this is already reported / similar enough to yours, then create your login so that you can tell devs by Report an issue either on an existing fp6 issue if found or create a new issue. I do not find an existing issue tagged audio + fp6 so a new issue would seem appropriate.

Further you could inform the supplier whether Fairphone or /e/OS.

You might also talk to your carrier about this.

Did you consider the possibility of loose connections within the phone, there is

https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360048018492-My-Phone-Doesn-t-work-What-Now.

Aren’t there ANY settings or functions I might check before such a step?

See, I need the phone for regular calls. Not being able to be understood clearly all the time is something I wish to fix as soon as possible.

Posting this as a bug or creating a new issue (as far as I understand) would force me to wait even longer for a solution, which I would rather avoid if possible. That’s why I’m asking if there are settings etc. I might check.

I got a hunch it happens more often when I call landline phones rather than cellphone to cellphone.

I do not think that there could be audio settings on the phone. The mobile phone part is just an optimised radio tx rx machine.

There are settings applicable to transmission found in Settings > Search for Preferred network type.

You are likely to find one marked “preferred”. Is this in use?

I have had to change mine from preferred very much by trial and error.

Recently users have had what I would call carrier issues based on 4G / 5G, but I feel this is going to be a big part local coverage.

It is something however that might crop up in a chat with your carrier hence that advice.

I got a rather old SIM, could this be a problem? The icon says that I get 5G and my plan has it too but could there be some shenanigans from the SIM side?

Thing is, it also happens when I use WIFI Calling, but I guess even then the SIM is involved somehow isn’t it? I lack the technical knowledge here. That’s why I’m asking what’s probably dumb questions.

This is one thing you could do on the device.

I feel your other questions should be directed to the carrier. They are taking your money for the transmissions. Ofc I cannot tell but when you have a problem not shared by other fp6 users I would be inclined to at least ask there.

I still don’t get what this could have to do with my carrier. Again: When the problem shows up, it ALWAYS gets fixed by switching to external speaker (or back).

After everything I’ve read and researched over the last days this sounds like something software-related.
