Fully degoogling

I’m trying to fully degoogle and get away from the American tech bro oligarchs. I’ve got fairphone 6 running e/os 4 and my main issues are needing google to make Android Auto work? Having a shared google photos album with my wife and reliance on WhatsApp

AA can run without Google apps:

I am not sure what is the main question? I am sure search of the forum will give many insights and Getting Started on /e/OS.

For “Fully degoogling” I am afraid that you may now have to search for a degoogled car. Many cars have an Android head but worse they have some “transfer box” deeper down also run by Google. (I read that car manufacturers can get free support from Google to include Google proprietary software.) [1]

Currently (in current standard search, @Manoj) of Support topics the page is not found for AA but threads with hastag android-auto discuss the subject.

Hi,

It’s possible to have Android Auto on /e/OS, look here : How to setup Android Auto with /e/OS?

For shared photos, you have others services, like ente, Immich, or Proton or Murena cloud too

Hi, using FP6 running e/OS 3.7, Android Auto working perfectly. I needed to install 3 google apps: Google, Maps and Voice Recognition in order to cheat the app. They’re in my phone as phantom apps (no permissions, no need to sign in).

Try, over time, to encourage your contacts (and businesses, institutions, etc.) to switch to, for example, Signal Messenger instead.

Meta-owned “services” are just vectors for exploitation.

I have been watching the Naomi Brockman videos on youtube, about various privacy topics and she published several interesting videos about car software and how to check what data your car system is gathering about you, such as this one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIryvRwxp9A. I didn’t know that some cars actually have sim cards to transmit the data. After watching these, I will never connect my phone to my car again.

Re: WhatsApp reliance, this is the guide I used to install WhatsApp into a separate work profile, so it doesn’t have access to my entire address book: [HOWTO] Using WhatsApp under shelter

Except instead of bothering with the Aurora Store, I just download the apk from their website every 2-3 months, when they stop supporting the old version.

There are obviously limitations and annoyances with this approach, but the only fix for that is to convince those people/businesses/activity groups/political parties (!!) to switch to a proper, private messaging system.

For example, it’s a pain to send photos, so I have told my friends and family on WhatsApp that they won’t be getting any more photos from me unless they switch to Signal. Some accepted, some didn’t :person_shrugging:

WhatsApp is the hardest to let go.

Not using other things tends to inconvenience yourself. Other maps aren’t as good as Gulag, non data mining email services cost money, etc.

But not using WhatsApp inconveniences other people as well. When you can’t join a group someone else in the group has to let you know things separately. Thankfully everyone in my household uses Signal and I convinced my extended family to as well. But work groups, cycling club and on and on can’t all be convinced to join Signal.

I am a building site supervisor and they gave me a normal Samsung tablet for work specific software and it has a SIM card. So I have WhatsApp on that so I can at least separate it from the rest of my life. It only has work contacts.

WhatsApp breaks all GDPR laws if used for a work phone but they get away with it somehow.

Also infuriating trying to explain to loved ones why not being spied upon by tech oligarchs is important
