I’d like to elaborate a bit on this statement: “@GaelDuval suggests using Curve for payment with Murena.” which sounds a bit oversimplistic.
The purpose of the article is to show that despite the Google and Apple monopolies on payments (OK, there was Samsung as well), we now have an alternative to use our smartphones:
to pay contactless in stores, like you do with a contactless bankcard (NFC)
to accept card payments (contactless or with insertion+pin) as a merchent
Obviously there are many other ways to make payments, especially online (card numbers, paypal and others, cryptos…), but the contactless payment in stores was only possible, until now and to my knowledge, using either google pay (that doesn’t work yet with /e/OS) or using the very few bank apps that support it. So I was surprised (and pleased) to discover at least one solution (Curve) that makes it possible very easily. (and the others I’ve been reported by some users are not a way to make contacless payments with a smartphone).
Also besing able to accept payments as a merchant with a /e/OS smartphones is notable enough to be noticed.
Also, it’s clear that like many other payments solutions, those are not very privacy-friendly, but this starts with your bank because they know absolutely everything about you. The only privacy-friendly solutions today are cash and some cryptos like Monero (not BTC, not ETH…).
Post inspired me to try, and can confirm that Curve works (on FP5 with /e/).
Had to do more experiments on how and when it works - I managed to use it once for now - surprised me to require holding the fingerprint sensor throughout the payment (1-2 sec).
It can be nice to go out and be able to buy things without carrying a wallet, so I am glad it is an option now
anonymous mode … yes. In cases of App Lounge difficulty I use all Advanced Privacy off and do not spam the system with repeat requests … I prefer “try again tomorrow” and avoid European peak time of day.
UK based FP5 user - my visa debit and credit cards are uploaded and have been verified by my bank - I just can’t seem to get them to work for contactless payments.
Just got it working! I just had to hold it over the contactless terminal for a little longer than I was used to with apple pay, and wait. I kept my finger on the print scanner just in case, though not clear if this actually made a difference. I’d also taken off the protective case I use.
Thanks to Piero’s link, I could also install the app.
Now, after multiple tries, the KYC failed, although my bank did verify the card by validating a transaction.
I contacted Curve’s support but immediately received an automated email:
“Thanks for getting in touch. I’m afraid that we were unable to verify your identity and cannot offer you a Curve Wallet account at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this.”
EDIT:
Read the recent comments on the Google Play store…

From my personal and professional experience, I can tell you that KYC is manual labor and an expensive part of the business. The same process in more professional companies involves human interaction. Curve did not ask me for my ID or driver’s license. No SMS verification.
So far, these are just red flags.
I’m disappointed again with the @GaelDuval initiative
Putting personal and financial data at risk.
I never investigated using NFC payments on my phone before. Thought I’d give it a lash when I saw it here in the Forum. Just in case I was left behind by technology kind of thing.
You’ve armed me now with what I need to look out for next time. I really should have researched the process better.
I registered Curve 8 months ago to get a virtual payment card so that I could use my Swatch for payments.
Yesterday I tested to pay with my /e/ phone and it worked flawlessly.
