GS290 Update 0.17>0.19 failed(?): Display black and not responding

Ha at all,
today I’ve tried to do an update of the Gigaset GS 290 of my girlfriend from 0.17 to 0.19 (which was the most latest option under settings>system update). The installtion file was downloaded and I clicked on install. The TWRP screen appeared which was new to me when it comes to simple updates.

The GS290 was configured by a former colleague of mine but worked well so far. I use a eOS S9 which I had configured with the easy installer myself and I havent seen the TWRP GIU again after the initial installation. The update is done completely “inside of eOS”.

Anyway, I’ve found the update file under /data/lineage-update or something like that. I clicked on “install” at the TWRP GUI and navigated to the update file, clicked on the checkbox “reboot after installation” and started the process. It printed out that its doing some backups and such. I’ve done a backup under TWRP myself before as well.

After I came back after a moment, the display was completely black, no button presses worked (different combinations of off/on and volume up/down for longer periods included), no light signals could be seen. If I connect it with my pc (Win 10) nothing happens at all.

I found similar topics here but they all seem to have problems during initial eOS installations and not within a normal update to a version, the OS itself suggested.

I’ve read, that sometimes the Gigaset needs to be nearly 100% charged for some operations, so its atm connected and charges for a while but I have not much hope left because it should be full by now.

Many thanks in advance, I hope someone can help.

I think there was no official TWRP for gs290 but there was an Unofficial TWRP which was withdrawn … I guess it was found unreliable.

Thanks for your replies.

@piero
I will keep the post you’ve cited in mind and it will help me for problems in the future but sadly because the smartphone isn’t responding at all, I cannot give more information. Surely it would have been better to note the complete version numbers, etc. before starting an update…
(I at least made a video of the steps with TWRP but the low light capabilities of the cam are too weak. I post screenshots of them anyway now. Possibly something can be seen.)

(ok, I can only putone screenshot here as a new user…)

I’ve noticed something new. If the GS is connected to the pc and I hold the power button, I can hear the typical USB connection sounds (but no device can be seen in the file explorer). I’ve read in another topic, that this would indicate the EDL mode but as far as I can read, this is something, only qualcom processors have which the GS290 don’t has.

Because I cannot access the device via PC, its not that clear for me, how I can use the links you cited above. I am not that experienced in installing/configuring alternative OS’s so possibly you could give me a little hint here how I can take control over the phone in this state.

Is there for instance a wiki with some steps I can use with the files from your links?

@aibd
Interesting. Is there a recommendation what should be used instead?

try to recover using your actual recovery mode (TWRP) (first try without wiping or formating /data → don’t do factory-reset)

  • you can install e-2.3-s
  • or you can install recovery-e-2.1-s then e-2.3-s

start at step (8) or (9)

.
if not working from recovery mode, try using fastboot mode (first try without wiping /data → don’t do fastboot -w)

  • you can install the content of IMG-e-2.3-s

Install /e/OS on a Gigaset GS290 - “GS290”

Hm… possibly I miss something but adb cannot see my device (“adb devices” command) and so I cannot do something like “adb reboot bootloader” in the cmd like its recommended in your install eOS on GS290 link.
(C:\platform-tools>adb reboot bootloader
error: no devices/emulators found)

I also cannot access TWRP anymore because my phone seems to be completely dead and the only thing it does is causing those USB connect/disconnect sounds after some seconds if its connected to my pc without beeing visible in my Windows file explorer or with adb devices.

adb only works when the device is booted in normal mode or in recovery mode

here is how to boot in recovery mode or in fastboot mode :
https://droidrecovery.com/gigaset-gs290-recovery-mode/

It is difficult to read your image, but my best guess is that you were running

1.9-q-20230310268292-stable-GS290 so Android 10 (Q), 10 March 2023.

I am hoping that you will find that you can reach fastboot mode and do not need to read on.

Several years ago there was a run of forum threads like “GS290 with black screen”, you may have seen them in your searches.

Installing /e/OS after removing UbuntuTouch on the GS290
This thread gives some insight to the position with TWRP Gigaset GS290, how to root and install ZIP files?

I will ty to manually install all the drivers mentioned in the link @piero posted (as already said, the button press way doesnt work) and hope, the Gs290 will be detected again.

The instructions of the first link which worked for the guys having the trouble, is a bit problematic for me because I don’t have any linux system running.

Update:
tried https://droidrecovery.com/gigaset-gs290-recovery-mode/ which was basically, what I’ve done so far but loading these win7 leacy drivers, right? Anyway, nothing changed. I had to deactivate the signature checking to install them but when installing the usb drivers “android_winusb.inf” it sais, its installed but probably won’t work.

I will now try the SP Flash Tool thing of Installing /e/OS after removing UbuntuTouch on the GS290 under windows or is this futile?

The Android 10 firmware link dosnt work anymore (gs290_10.zip | by Phie for Generic Device/Other). Has anyone a safe alternative source?

SP Flash Tool SP Flash Tool Download All versions for MediaTek Devices is available for Windows and Linux, but it is imperative to read the correct instructions for your device. It is possible to brick your phone by misuse of SP Flash Tool.

Do you get a particular error from the AndroidFileHost link? The download is working (and completed) here. AFH can be troublesome … try different servers, different time of day … you may have to disable some security setting on your browser (??).

Your right, refresh/another browser worked.

So if you say “… but it is imperative to read the correct instructions for your device. It is possible to brick your phone by misuse of SP Flash Tool.” you mean what exactly? These 7 point of the instruction?

  1. First take a backup of your existing data
  2. PC and phone are not connected via USB.
  3. Device is switched off.
  4. Open SP Flash Tool.
  5. Go to Download tab (choose “Download Only) and select scatter file “MT6763_Android_scatter.txt” inside the extracted firmware
  6. Press Download.
  7. Plug in the device.

The instruction is written for Suse Linux. Will I have to do different or additional things on Win10?

And for “3. Device is switched off.”, is my device off if its not responding like I discribed it or can it be more off

I do not use Windows, but, yes, exactly that.

SP Flash Tool does have instructions with it.

Flash Tool is a bit like an Engineer’s solution, so my interpretation is to avoid guessing and read carefully.

The only thing which is sadly not in the 7 step guide is to exclude the preloder (the instruction of the flash tool sais it could cause bricking the phone).

So, I’ve done all this and downloaded the firmware on the phone. The tool sais that everything has been done but nothing changed. The phone doesn’t start (different combinations of on/off together with Volume up/down for several seconds, etc), is not accessible via the file explorer nor does a light goes on, if I load it.

Is this the end?
(or can I try again without destroying even more? (but how could it be more destroyed?) )

Maybe someone who has used SP Flash Tool on GS290 can provide some insight or help.

There is a guide to assist installing on MediaTek devices using SPFlashTool if that helps.

Thanks for your help. I downloaded firmware images for my android 10. Tried the most recent 1.19, 1.17 and 1.14 but none of them has a scatter file in the zip folder. Where can I get one?

As mentioned in the guide I used this site:
https://images.ecloud.global/stable/GS290/

The scatter file for GS290 should come along with the v2.4 build. It should be released in the release cycle which has started.

Update: the scatter file will come as part of v2.5 release

So I have to wait till its released? I need an image for Android 10. The latest one is from march 2023 (1.19). Will a scatter file be added for this (or another for Anroid 10) as well?

Can you tell me approximately how long this will take?
