Installing /e/OS on Pixel 8

Hello everybody,
0. I am trying to install /E/OS on a Pixel 8 and I get to step 14/21 where I am supposed to start recovery mode.

  1. I do get to choose recovery mode, but then
  2. the screen goes black for 9s,
  3. a warning comes up that the bootloader ist unlocked and software integrity cannot be guaranteed for 9s
  4. the screen goes white with the google logo showing up for 1s
  5. screen goes black again for another 13s
  6. the warning comes up again that the bootloader is unlocked and software integrity cannot be guaranteed for 9s
  7. the screen goes white again with the google logo showing up for 1s
  8. screen goes black again for another 13s
  9. fastboot status screen reappears and stays on

Can anybody please help me?
Best regards,
Marcus

Seems like the “faill installer” do not use the right process that is particular for this device, please follow official instructions (you do not have to boot to recovery, all is done throught “fastboot” in bootloader mode)
Install /e/OS on a Google Pixel 8 - “shiba”

Note :

Hi Piero,
thank you for your response, but as a novice to developer mode it quite frankly it leaves me with more questions than before.
For example:
What is supposed to happen to the data that was already transfered to my phone? Doesn´t that have to be erased?
Why does the procedure you linked refer to Android 14 while the Pixel 8 was shipped with Android 15 at market intrduction and mine actually has Android 16 installed?
Why do you point out there might be a Windows driver issue? As can be seen from my screenshots my phone was recognized and the installation process worked well up to the point I described…

Consequently I would like to know how to go back to the starting point of the installation process so I can just retry.
Or as an alternative I would like to get help from an expert (of course I am willing to pay for the support): Is it for example possible to send the phone in to murena?

Best regards,
Marcus

shiba was offered with A14 from ~Q3-2023 to Q3-2024 – but you must study this link Factory Images for Nexus and Pixel Devices as of May 2025 there is a special (that is, extra_to_normal) anti rollback on this device.

From my reading it is not clear the position of your shiba with A16 (possibly it is safe from this warning (??) ) – but downgrade to A14 looks to be no longer be possible if you had the May 2025 update at A15. Take note of the warning / advice about the inactive slot.

I would consider carefully how to recover the phone to the build you had previously paying especial attention to proposed and last date of Android SPL.

Thank you for your response, but this topic really seems too complicated for me. I´ll need to look for somebody to help me with this.

Hi there,
I own a Pixel 8 as well and I can confirm the following:

  • if your device got the May 2025 update from Google, it cannot go back to android 14 (what is referred to as anti roll back), therefore you cannot install e/OS for now;
  • if your device is on android 15, you need to wait for the e/OS team to release an A15-based version for the Pixel 8; You can regularly check the weekly development status pages.
  • if your device is on android 16, you need to downgrade to android 15 and wait as explained above; to downgrade to android 15 you should be able to use Android Flash Tool.

The good thing is that the e/OS team has never been so close to releasing A15-based versions, so you should not have to wait too long. :upside_down_face:

Well, it has been released:

Community build yes, Official build is still A14

Ohh yeah true a bit wrong of comment, the issue here was locking bootloader with official I guess…

Community build works fine for me (and also others). Even installation with the script which is almost like the webinstaller in the case of Pixel 8 makes it easy. Webinstaller is a mixed bag for me. The first time I touched it, it kinda worked with a Pixel 5. I was even convinced in it to create a guide with pictures for everyone for easier problemsolving but I gave up on that. While creating that guide it was always interrupted at step x. ,o I gave up on that…

Trying with fastboot, etc. is easy enough and as I said, some devices have these scripts you can run which easy almost a no brainer.

Other users are trying to help …

… are you able to give a very accurate best guess of the previous running system? If in doubt please try to cover your uncertainties.

Hi everybody,
sorry for answering this late but from my point the topic can be closed: I did not find anybody to get the phone back from fastboot mode.
I think I lost it, as I updated to Android 16.
If I had tried the easy installer I probably would have found the remark to start the installation process with Android 14, but the instructions for the web-installer only told to update to the latest available software…
It’s a pity I bricked the phone that way, but I also have to admit I have only been a /e/OS- user so far and took the risk because the instructions seemed so easy.
Consequently I ordered a phone from the murena-shop…
Best regards,
Marcus

Wait you bricked it you say…?

Yes: Please see my description at the beginning of the thread.
Soft brick maybe, but I did not find anybody to get it back so far…

Try Flash Tool as @Troudi has suggested.

Official tool from Android Team but needs Chrome
