Murena Cloud does not synchronize… or “once in a while” and incompletely

This is a problem that seems to have existed since I started using /e/OS and Murena (i.e., many years ago). I almost have come to accept that I can’t expect anything from Murena Cloud, but sometimes it’s annoying, especially when my phone shows me notifications that “my cloud space is almost full” even though I cleaned it up a long time ago.

It seems that Murena Cloud only syncs with the files on my smartphone “once in a while”. Today I took a quick look at the Murena Cloud web interface and saw that the last synchronizations of folders in which I added images a few days ago… date back several months (so the images aren’t there, but I do find images that I deleted a long time ago). And for some (sub)folders, seemingly at random, Murena decides to synchronize them, and then I can see recent changes that are correctly replicated. However, I use the “sync” button on the /e/os interface on my smartphone, but it seems to completely ignore it. Is there an explanation for this erratic behavior? Any possible solutions?

What phone, eOS version? For testing purpose create another account and see what happens…if it is still no dice work through that…and see what happens ;- )

Thanks. Sorry, i forgot the basics  I’m on a Fairphone 3, and with /e/os version 1.14 … and, looking for that info, i saw that an /e/os update was pending since march (1.20) … I thought it was automatic ; i’m going to begin with that, then try what you suggest.

This build goes back to around Autumn 2023 … so potentially you have a lot of further updates ahead. :slightly_smiling_face:

[HOWTO] Give complete /e/OS version info easily for support, answers, comparison etc

OK, after doing 4 or 5 updates to /e/os in a row  I am now on the latest version, 3.1.4.

That didn’t solve the problem, so I tried the solution provided in the link by DoppelD : in the Murena Cloud web interface settings, check the “client synchronization” box (after making a complete backup of what was on the Murena server and what was on my Fairphone). After backing up, I deleted all the files on both sides, then put the files I wanted to keep back on my Fairphone (and to test the synchronization).

So now : when I create a new file in Documents, it is synchronized. When I create an empty folder in Documents, it is not synchronized, but when I save a file in it, then they are synchronized.

But there is still a problem: some folders with files in them, which I had put back on my Fairphone, are not replicated on Murena Cloud. Apparently, these are only the folders that kept the same name during the operation and that I put back in the same place as before on the Fairphone. It’s as if Murena had blacklisted them “by that name and at that address.” I tried simply renaming them: after 15 minutes (perhaps this is considered a normal amount of time?), they finally were reflected in Murena Cloud with the new name, and their content.

By the way : as for the Tasks and Notes apps, synchronization seems to be working well.

But as for the contacts directory (which, according to the Accounts section on my /e/OS, is synchronized correctly)… it does not appear in Murena Cloud, which shows me an empty Contacts section. I should point out that this has been the case since I started using this Fairphone with /e/OS.

So there are still bugs with this synchronization.

Doppel-D, you mentioned creating another account… but how exactly do I do that ? Does that mean I have to delete the current account first ?

Thank you

with Contacts directory you mean this url ? if contacts aren’t uploaded from device to server the individual entries are likely “device local” and not in the addressbook that is synced

as to filesync.. device side a log is kept of what was uploaded before and the etag / date compared to what is on the remote when there is a collision. Was the remote (“cloud”) empty? if you want to go from a clean slate 1. have backups and 2. reset “storage” in Settings → App → show system apps → eDrive. That is where the sync state lives.

@tcecyk : for Contacts, yes I mean this url indeed. Nothing there. But on device, in Settings > Accounts, i see 3 Murena accounts, seemingly active : one named by my username (the main I guess), one named Webmail (i dont use this) and one named Contacts. Doesnt this one synchronize with the contacts in the native /e/ contacts app ?

@tcecyk “device side a log is kept” where do i find the log, device-side ?

Apart from that, I continue my testing, and I see that when I delete a file or folder, the cloud doesn’t sync the change neither (the folders/files remains, murena-side, even after one hour).

if the contacts are all device local, one way to do it is: export vcf, purge all, import .vcf through murena web into synced account

The deeper you dive into the more annoying it gets ;- )

Pictures and videos toggle will affect synchronization for Images, Movies, Music, Ringtones, Documents and Podcasts directories.

On the device you are not informend about that.

The absence of adress-book synchronization wasn’t really a priority for me: I manually export this address book on a regular basis.

Now that the non-propagation of deletions has been clarified as normal behavior (thanks @tcecyk), the only real bug that still bothers me is the fact that if I put a previously deleted folder/file back on the device side, it no longer seems to want to synchronize it (the “blacklist” phenomenon, or at least that’s what I call it).

Is this also ‘normal’ behavior that I have to deal with?
