Murena Maps is here in beta! Try it, and help us shape v1

Hi everyone,

Today is a big day: as part of our /e/OS v4 launch event, we are launching Murena Maps in beta!

Many of you have followed the development of this app since we first introduced it earlier this year as an alpha build, and gave us tons of useful feedback along the way. Thank you for that. Now it’s time to put it in a broader set of hands by launching it as a beta build.

Why another maps app?

There are several great open-source, open-data, open-standards maps apps out there, and we love them. But none of them fit exactly with what we need for /e/OS: an app that is suitable for mainstream users and that instantly ‘just works’ when you open it. We wanted an app that would not necessitate you to download gigabytes of map files first before being able to use it. With Murena Maps, you open the app, you search, you go: it is an online maps app, built natively for Android. In other words, we wanted to offer the same level of user experience one can find in mainstream maps applications, while offering a true pro-privacy approach. Because of course, like everything we build, Murena Maps has no tracking, no profiling, no selling your locations and routes to advertisers. Your data is YOUR data.

How to install

You have two options:

1. Install via Obtainium: If you opt for this option, the app will stay automatically up to date with each new beta release. If you don’t have Obtainium yet, you can get it here. After installing Obtainium, simply tap this link while you are on your phone. Obtainium will set everything up for you automatically or you will have to click “Install” first inside “Murena Maps” in Obtainium. When you can choose from 2 versions, choose the ARM version and not the X86. If you get an error after clicking “Install”, it can help to keep Obtainium on your screen while the app is installing. From then on, you’ll receive every beta update automatically.
2. Download the APK directly from our GitLab repository: Releases · e / os / Murena Maps · GitLab (choose “com.murena.maps-arm64-v1.0.0-beta.apk” under “Packages”).

Built on great open-source software and open data

Murena Maps stands on the shoulders of some very cool open projects:

1. OpenStreetMap for map data
2. MapLibre for map rendering
3. WhosOnFirst for points of interest
4. Transitous for public transport data

and several other open-source projects and open data sources. The source code of Murena Maps is available at e / os / Murena Maps · GitLab. Romain, our engineering manager, presented the full architecture at FOSDEM if you want to dive deeper.

What works already

You can search destinations, plan trips using multiple transport modes (including public transport) and navigate. And Murena Maps synchronizes your favorite places with Murena Workspace, so you can access your saved locations across multiple devices.

Why beta? Because we want to build this with you

This app still needs significant improvement. That is exactly why we are launching it in beta rather than making it the default maps app in /e/OS right away. We believe the best way to get from beta to a great v1 is together with this community, the same way /e/OS itself has been built.

Some of the things we will be working on next:

1. A web-based version to accompany the Android app (which will also run on other AOSP-based operating systems)
2. Improved navigation functionalities, like traffic data
3. Improved UI and UX
4. Improved Point Of Interest (POI) data and search
5. Improved sharing of locations with friends

So, please install Murena Maps and take it for a spin. A note for the users of the alpha build: you will need to delete that and download anew this beta build. After you have used it, please let us know in the comments below:

Installed the ARM version right away (apk) on my FAIRPHONE and set it up as far as I could with Wi-Fi deactivated. I created a folder for maps on my microSDXC card for the app. Without internet, there was no app shown at all (as could be expected ).

Once I switched Wi-Fi on, the world map showed like instantly. Manually zooming into my location (without location activated) worked quite fluidly and precisely.

Right now I’m downloading the viewport of my area, that takes time …

there are some server crashes because many people are trying to download the app simultaneously, so please try again another day if you are getting an error!

After opening the map, the local area shows up in a viewport. If I scroll past the viewport, the new area that I have scrolled to does not update. I can get the data for the new area by downloading the new viewport, but it does not update automatically.

Will this app be available for Android devices also ? or is it only for e/OS/ users ?

great work so far. What I like about the app: it feels neat and clean, pls try to keep this impression, even when you add functionality with time.

Otherwise, here 3 quick observations

1. The first download option seems not (yet) to work.

2. The voice (just tested the German one) is unbearable (unless you like videogames from the 1980s).

3. Make sure that the “start navigation” button is visible without swiping up (otherwise mx mum would never ever use this app )

   

Otherwise, I am inpatiently looking forward to upcominh iterations of Murena Maps….

So i can directly type in the Name of my family&friends and get navigated to them.

Download fast and installation too.

Launching is ok but with advanced privacy enabled (& hide my position on) maps gave me another position than mine. Other official app like comaps gave the correct position.

Perhaps time to wait another version

Hi, waiting for a new FP6 to arrive - the FP say e/OS v.3.0.4 - are those beta Maps supposed to work fine on that one please?

Hello, I set the theme of the app as system default. how do I change the theme in settings? I didn’t found it and would like to make it to “white” not dark for this app.

nice to have nearby departures, I can see buses departures near my home.

does someone know how to hide the bottom menu?

If you want to have a particular them for this app only, isn’t it better to set within the app parameters?

Anyway, the general setting is there (may vary, depends on your device) :
Param > screen > dark theme

I could not open the link as well. Maybe @Didou has the same issue. It worked for me when I searched for “dev.imranr.obtainium” in the AppLounge and switched to “Open Source” tab.
