Hello, new to these forums as I’ve just had a major problem with my Galaxy S7 that I hope someone here can help me with. I’ve read a lot of similar messages on this forum before posting and I think the problem is that I should have moved from 1.17.1 to 1.20 before moving to 2.4.1 (or later). However the only downloads proposed by the updater on my phone today were 2.4.1, 2.5 and 2.6.3 (from memory) and foolishly I tried updating to 2.4.1 resulting in a boot loop with an “e” and the jumping dot. I may be over simplifying things here but I believe if I can reinstall the 1.17.1 version things will resolve themselves and I can then update in the correct order. However the 1.17.1 version is no longer available on the /e/OS build downloads page and I was hoping someone could point me to a copy. I did locate the equivalents in source code but since there were no checksums available I was a bit nervous. Many thanks in advance for any help someone here can provide.
Hello Piero, I’m pretty new to the nuts and bolts of /e/os but hopefully I’ll learn fast. I really appreciate your help with this ! This is a stock S7 purchased from the e foundation about 5 years ago, with /e/os pre installed. After the upgrade failed and I realised my mistake I copied a zip file of the OS (2.6.3) to a microSD and was trying to install using the recovery utility on the S7. The reinstallation appeared to have worked correctly (looking at the logs) but I still get the reboot loop … I’d like to be able to try again with an older version and hopefully it will fix the problem.
upgrading from a Q version to higher imply to format /data and so loose your apps and settings …
you can try, in the recovery-e, go to factory reset, then formating cache partition only (if proposed, not on all models), and then reboot system, it could revive your phone
easier, (if your bootloader is unlocked), installing TWRP could allow you to copy at least the content of your internal storage and more if you know were to go by mounting others partitions
Oops. Before I go down that path I’d really like to try to reinstall the 1.17.1 version and see what happens - is there anywhere I can download the zip file from ?
for info, my phone is a Samsung Galaxy S7 G930F purchased pre-installed with /e/os from the e-foundation in 2019.
After a lot of hunting around on this forum and elsewhere I think I have pieced together what went wrong with my update and resulted in a boot loop which for the moment seems to be unfixable without a reinstall.
I was running 1.17.1-q and the subsequent update had a lot of warnings concerning adoptable storage, so I held off updating until I fully understood what the problem was as I had an SD card installed but wasn’t sure how it was being used. Turns out it wasn’t being used by any apps at all so I ejected it before the update. However, in the time it took me to get round to actually doing the update the 1.20-r that I probably should have installed for a clean migration had disappeared from the list of available updates and only the 2.4.1-s and later were listed - I’m guessing this was due to the server outage I read about somewhere on this forum. The only reason I pushed ahead with the update is because I had been getting expiry warnings from the Signal app I have installed and there is currently no corresponding update available in the App Lounge (we’re having the same problem on a later version of the OS on an S9 too). However this is an unconnected issue.
I have spent a lot of time trying to locate a zip file of the 1.17.1-q version in order to attempt a reinstall to try to recover some of my data but to no avail so far. All of the links I have found point to “Not Found” pages. It probably won’t resolve the issue but I’d like to try before I wipe the phone and install a 2.6.3 from scratch.
So if anyone has backed up a copy of the e-1.17.1-q-20240208379201-stable-herolte.zip I would really appreciate hearing from you.
Finally, as an anecdote, the phone was a gift from my work colleagues when I retired from the IT industry and I have been a fervent advocate for the /e/os / Murina phones ever since. The current situation has put a bit of a dent in my enthusiasm …
Hello Piero, your help in this matter is really appreciated ! If nothing turns up your suggestion could be a solution to recuperating some of my data (mostly photos that hadn’t been backed-up for a while and a couple of useful files …). I had seen some references to TWRP so definately need to look into that. I take it you are referring to a generic boot.img for the S7 just to make it mountable - any pointers as to where I can find a copy ?
Again, many thanks for your help with this !
hypothetically,
a lineage or /e/ boot.img for the S7 may make the device wake up and boot in normal system
.
also for sure,
from the already installed recovery-e, you should use “adb push” or “adb pull”
also for sure,
from the already installed recovery-e, you should use “dd commands”
TWRP enable the MTP protocol to easily copy yours things from the /sdcard folder, also called “internal storage” (what is visible in normal mode) to your PC … … … and maybe more (if you know where to look for, and copy them into the accessible “internal storage”) as TWRP give you a Graphical Interface to explore the entire system tree.
Hi Xxpsilon, brilliant ! I just need the zip file so I’ll try to figure out the easiest way for you to post it somewhere for me. I guess you can just paste the sha256sum here.
Thank you !
Hi Piero, interesting. If I can get the phone to wake up and allow a connection from my Fedora box I can copy the files accross - I don’t particularly need a GUI. If my attempt to reinstall 1.17 fails that’s defininately next on my todo list. Thanks !
Hi Xxpsilon, you can post the files here: https://transfert.free.fr/ to the attention of my email : transfer.eos@free.fr (temporary email). The file will be password protected so you can email the password to me separately. Sorry but the interface is in French but it’s pretty self explanatory !
Hi aibd, I think this is the same share - just the “free” one ! Also looks like it’s in English !!!Useful information !
