2021: Week wise OS upgrade and new Device release plan

In continuation to the comments in this post this is a list of devices with dates by when we plan to either add them to the official list or upgrade the OS.

This list is not final and more devices will be added to this list.

Where the OS is being upgraded the build will have to be manually flashed. At present the Updater in the /e/OS cannot upgrade an OS. Subsequent builds will be updated OTA.

We will also build the Pie builds for those users who have not upgraded or want to continue using it. This should be available OTA. The supported devices list will show the Q build only. Will check if it is possible to display in the documentation.

Hello Manoj, thanks for the update and the good work. I have installed /e/ on my Galaxy S9+ via the Easy Installer. Can this upgrade also be executed via this tool, or does it need to be flashed manually?

The Easy Installer flashes the stable build which should be available by end of next week. Since you already have the stable build on your device your stable update would come in OTA. No need to flash it again manually or via the tool.

Hi Manoj,

You mentioned the list will be completed. What about support for the Samsung S7 ? I bought mine from /e/ so I am pretty interested to get the new android version. Any idea when the list will be “final” ?

:slight_smile: this list will never be ‘final’…there will always be new devices being added or existing ones being removed. It will always be a WIP document.
The devices that are sold on eShop especially the older models present an interesting problem. While we can upgrade the OS and continue sending OTA builds for the device the vendors and support centers may have abandoned those devices. An alternative I would suggest is we provide customers of these devices new models at a discount to replace the older ones. This would help in case these devices develop hardware issues which the e phone user would not be able to fix.

Good to know :slight_smile: I really hope the S7 will be maintained. It will be hard to justify to early customer that the old Samsung S3…S5 is supported whereas the S7 bought from Eelo won’t.

@Manoj So Redmi Note 8/8T ginko is not on the list. I was understanding from telegram support channel discussion some time ago that it would be officially supported, cause asked specifically that.

It’s not problem otherwise, but cause of that I’ve given wrong information here on forum. First it was supposed to be available at the end of the year, so at one ginko thread I mentioned to one interested person, that (s)he might want to wait official version. Then that time changed to week 1, then week 2 / 2021and I informed those changes… Then it was new devices at week 3, didn’t update that anymore.

Now Redmi Note 8/8T is not in the list at all and person in that thread is asking when will that official ROM arrive. Should I after all this just say to flash unofficial one?

This is much my mistake too to be given bad advices, but I tried originally be clear at my questions at telegram support group. Won’t make this error again thought. It’s better to forward only official announcements.

Anyway I’m not “blaming” anyone, or if someone, myself. Just trying to correct those informations I’ve given based on how I understood those answers at Telegram.

When I checked the galaxy S9+ download page first thing today 25/01/21 (NZ time) I’m sure I saw the new q builds but half an hour later I went to download and despite link saying q build the downloads had reverted to O builds!

  1. Since when is this available, because only in August I purchased my FP3?
  2. Backup of data is recommended because it might be OR WILL be deleted.
    Is there any standard backup procedure available in order to avoid manual installation and new configuration of all apps installed?

The earliest “dev” release channel Android 10 (Q) build still visible currently is from early November 2020. The last install file for Android 9 ( P ) I kept on my harddisk is from the end of October 2020, so somewhere around then I suppose.

It says there “Please note the upgrade process will wipe out the data on your device.”
A required step is unlocking the bootloader. Unlocking as well as locking the bootloader will force a factory reset for security reasons.
If not for that, the fastboot -w in the instructions will do it.

This is a popular question, because there’s no default procedure yet. Seedvault integration is on the way to improve the situation, but that doesn’t help you now.

There’s work being done on the OS updater to enable it to do an OTA upgrade to a new major Android version without wiping user data, but there’s no timeline for this.
For now upgrading to Android 10 means wiping data.

Last question (hopefully): the current available Android 10 (Q) base of /e/, is this a P (production) version or does it make sense to wait for this ( could you maybe give an indication, when available if not yet).
