[Device Roadmap] Android 9 (Pie) & 10 (Q) : The plan

As you may be aware we have been working at the beginning of 2020 on coming up with a plan on finalizing the list of officially supported devices.

The following new list of devices includes :

  1. Existing devices to upgrade to Android 9 (Pie) or Android 10 (Q)
  2. New devices to add to the list of supported devices
  3. Devices to drop from the list of supported devices

We will be updating the device lists in case any device has been missed out in each category

1. Existing devices being upgraded to Android 9 (Pie) or Android 10 (Q)

Only 3 devices will be upgraded to Android 8 (Oreo)

If the Status is “In testing” and Version is Android 9 (Pie), here you can download the test build.
If the Status is “In testing” and Version is Android 10 (Q), here you can download the test build.
If the Status is “Supported”, here you can download the official build.
If the Status is “To build”, wait for a build.

3. Devices to be dropped from official /e/OS support

The reason behind dropping these devices can be :

Even if these devices will no longer be officially supported by Q4 2020 :

  • The device source code as well as the latest working build will remain available on our servers. Users with ROM building skills can also build unofficial builds for these devices.

  • If at a later stage it’s possible to easily build a working build on Android 9 or 10 for these devices (thanks to a new LineageOS support for instance), we may support them again.

Thx for sharing. But I miss the GSI in that list / plan. As I have written in a different post, GSI is getting more and more important. And if eOS will have a working GSI Q it will save e development a lot development time, because one GSI fit’s for a lot of devices. That also means less storage space, less CPU time for building. Ans this all together means: saving a lot of money!!!

This list is only about device builds. It is only the first in a series of posts sharing more details around builds.
GSI is a totally different subject. Besides I was checking with our GSI expert and he mentioned it is not a ‘one-size fits all’ situation as I was hoping. It is more like if Samsung then do this and if LG do something different.
We will share a plan for GSI builds later. BTW we were checking if it is possible to update GSI’s OTA.

@Manoj , What plans do you have for Xiaomi Mi A1 (tissot)? (I have not seen it in either of the 3 groups)

To add to @LEPT i didnt see xiaomi redmi note 4x or samsung galaxy s4mini on it

To answer @LEPT and @Chimpthepimp’s questions added a comment to the original post

There are some more names which still need to be checked out and then added in the appropriate lists.

hi @Manoj , great news that there will also be a few tablets that are supported!!
I do have a question about the great number of phones that will still be supported: will it be feasible for /e/, in terms of resources, to keep providing fast and regular updates for these phones? In 2019 and 2020 so far, this proved challenging for /e/. What will change per Android Q?

The difference we have is we have a single ROM for all the devices. The same code base and apps for all. Now we are going to be focused on a set of devices on which the apps and ROM works.
Devices where we have had build issues are being dropped. There will not be any nougat devices in our list that itself cleans out some old bugs.
Some devices which are still not showing up are because their oreo test builds have issues.
We are closely watching the user feedback on unofficial builds. A bigger list of devices does not necessarily mean more problems  Stable unofficial builds means better chances of devices getting on the official list.
The FP3 port is an example I would like to quote. When issues come up they are reported and we have been reasonably fast with the fixes.
There will be a update on the testing process which I will share in a few days once we have the whole process documented. Stay tuned

Hi,

  1. Why is there a lot of devices already supported in the “New devices being added” list ?

  2. What about the EOL of the Nougat source ? Will it be updated so that new unofficial builds will be possible, or devices that can only be built on Nougat won’t be able to have an updated unofficial build anymore ?

I am sorry to see that several devices that I am using daily got dropped. What should I do now?

Don’t worry, unofficial builders will be there for you  (we won’t be able to solve device specific issues though)
(you could even build yourself)

I don’t think anybody interested in building a rom for Note 2 and 4 but thank you we will see I guess :slightly_smiling_face:

  1. Thanks for pointing that out. Have updated the lists and removed existing devices from the new devices list.
The older devices will be upgraded to Oreo / Pie / Q which ever is the latest version possible for them.
  2. Nougat code will be available in the servers as mentioned here

If by maintained you mean bugs getting fixed in them that will not be possible once we hit EOL. Without security or vendor patches Nougat builds will be a bit risky and unstable on devices.

Yes that’s what I meant. So Nougat source won’t be dropped before Q4 2020 (October, 1st 2020). Thanks for the info.

If a LineageOS 15.1 or 16.0 or 17.1 exists for your device, unofficial builders will be able to help, I’m sure somebody will take the time to do so.
If not, you will have to stick with the last official /e/ build for your device and that’s it.

This is great news as we’re already a month into Q3
